LGBTQ characters in anime

    I have chatted with a number of fans of Japanese animation previously on EC. Interestingly enough, I have noticed that you can find a fair number of LGBTQ characters in certain anime depending on the series. The story may openly spell it out or just imply the possibility. Does anyone have any thoughts on how they are portrayed in the different series? I'm kinda curious.

    Examples:
    Mao-chan - Lesbian "Mirai Nikki/Future Diary"
    Instructor Chronos - Possible Trans "Yu-Gi-Oh Gx"
    Mikan Tsumiki - Possible Bisxeual "Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy."

    My first thought is the canon relationship between Viktor and Yuuri from Yuri!!! On ICE, but I'll also mention that Yachi from Haikyuu!! has shown clear signs of a crush on Kiyoko, the other female manager.

    Also, I've watched the first season of Danganronpa, and while I can't remember the names of most of the characters, I'm pretty sure there was a transgender girl.

    Well not from an Anime but the Fire Emblem video game series has had a couple!! One is Rhajat, and she's obsessed with the Avatar, no matter the gender!

    I'm pretty sure the Danganronpa character you are thinking of is Chihiro Fujisaki. One of these days I am going to need to watch Yuri!! on ICE as well.

    I remember the first few examples from when I watched Danganronpa 3 and Psycho-Pass. Incidentally I own copies of both of those series.

    I kinda liked how nonchalant they were about it in Psycho-Pass and how they actually treated it like an ordinary thing.

    I agree. I feel that the best portrayals are when you can clearly tell the preferences of the character or characters, but the series doesn't linger too much if at all on the subject unless there is a good reason. .

    While i have personally never watched it, Steins; Gate has a transgender character. Ruka Urushibara (May have botched the name) I plan to watch it though.

    there were lesbians in psycho-pass? I guess it seemed so normal to me it passed over my head.

    Nobara Yukinokouji from Inu X Boku Secret Secrice is pretty obviously a lesbian. She says it herself... but it is overly portrayed (It is a comedy anime after all)

    Grell from Black butler is apearently transgender. (From what i just read, anyways)

    I'm... not quite so sure of any others.

    I don't remember the exact episode count but there was a scene where one morning, the two get out of bed together basically naked but they never really focus or put any emphasis on it so while it can be hard to miss if you aren't paying close attention, the subtlety behind it is really nice.

    All i know is is name starts with the "Ak" sound. but i can think of plenty right now, especially since i JUST finished steins;gate minus the extra episode.

    The protagonists from Wandering Son are a Transgirl and a Transboy and one of their friends is bigender.

    And there are some in Dragon Maid.
