As a Pole, I found this to be heartbreaking news to be honest :frowning2:. But I guess I chalk it up to being a product of a bygone era I suppose (Not to make excuses for his bigoted beliefs on this topic of course) The fact that there are members of the Polish LGBT Community (anna grodzka, Robert Biedroń) being elected to the Sejm holds the hope for a brighter future in Poland I think. That more people in Poland are holding more progressive beliefs on LGBT rights and not the way Walesa thinks is comforting.. (Though there still is a way to go ) Regardless, Walesa did many great things for the people of Poland and the rest of the Eastern Bloc, but here, I feel he should have really, really kept his mouth shut..it really is too bad >_<

Well, it's nice to see the Russian's and Walesa agree on something.

    Hey, this is an improvement.

In Soviet Poland, the walls used to sit on you.

This is the problem with having heroes. Ultimately, most of them turn out to be just as flawed (or sometimes even more) than the rest of us.

I applaud Lech Walesa for his work to promote democracy in Poland. I fault him for his bigoted and hurtful speech towards repressed people.

Good to see that there is some progress for LGBT people in Poland. This is likely to provoke outburst from more conservative elements in polish society.

On the contrary. We can be our own heroes. And we can be heroes for others.

    That's true

My point was just that idolizing someone often backfires.

    Ya, that point's well-accepted.

So disappointing. I have great respect for the work that he did and this will indeed tarnish that memory.

At the end of the day, I guess his work to promote democracy was for straight people only, reminds me of the book Animal farm & that now famous quote “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

Sit back and not have a voice in big things? From a Novel Peace Prize winner? Really? I doube she would say this against other minorities (women despite how it would make no sense, blacks, etc...).
