I happen to find my self in Istanbul this week so I decided to stay a few days and play tourist. Last night, We went out and explored the area around Taksim. Wow! What an amazing neighborhood. The people, the energy, the bars, were all amazing.

We hit a few gay places such as Haspa and Chaplin cafe to name a few. The vibe was fantastic, everyone was friendly, and everyone was Out and Proud!

I have been to other Muslim countries, but this is the first one where I have seen such an open LGBT community. I Loved it!

The neighborhood seemed no different than being in Soho in London, Hells Kitchen in New York, Wilton Manors in Fort Lauderdale or any other gaybourhood; although the friendliness was really noteworthy.

I am looking forward to exploring some more tonight, I think Chianti bar is in order? If anyone is in Istanbul and has some other recommendations, please let me know.

Wow, so amazing! I wouldn't have thought! Thanks for showing that there is acceptance/hope in such a place remote from the "western" culture

Yeah, turkey is right up there with the UAE, and Indonesia in being the most liberal Islamic-majority countries....and Israel, even though that's not Muslim, but it is in the Middle East, so it counts!

Istanbul is worlds apart from the rest of Turkey. Even some areas in lower class Istanbul are dangerously hostile to LGBT people. It's nice to hear such openminded areas exist but it's important to bear in mind that those are exceptions rather than the rule.

I lived there on and off for a few years, and it's a beautiful city. If there is any way you can visit the Hagia Sophia, it's an amazing place.

My favorite foods were döner and iskender, but there are a lot of good things to choose from.

Istanbul isn't 'remote from Western culture'.
