For me, smoking is a big turn off. I have never smoked and I find the smell of tobacco disgusting and I'm pleased it's now banned in all public areas of the UK and will be banned in cars too. My partner and I are of the same mind, we will not allow people to smoke in our home.

Thing is, I see lots of gay men smoking quite heavily and I wonder if it really is more common within the LGBT community? What are your thoughts?

If you think smoking is more common within the LGBT community, why might that be?

I've never smoked, but I do get the impression that it's more common. As for me, I'm not fond of the smell, but if my partner smokes, it isn't a big problem for me.

I hate smoking, I doubt I would EVER date a smoker.

The smell of cigarette smoke makes me want to ALMOST sneeze... it's that incredibly annoying feeling when you really really need to sneeze but the sneeze doesn't come. I just avoid it :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Also, I don't think being LGBT really significantly affects whether you smoke or not.

Never smoked. Actual cigarette smoke does cause me to sneeze or my nose will feel irritated, but I actually find the smell of tobacco (not cigarretes) pleasing.

As for the LGBT community, maybe the stress of being different drives many to vices such as smoking and drinking. But, I could be wrong.

I agree completely. Smoking is somehow banned in my country too (restaurants, public buildings, pubs, etc..), although you are allowed to smoke in your car or outside. I wish that one is only allowed to smoke at home..

When I'm with someone who smokes, my eyes start burning immediately, so I have to go away. If I don't, I end up coughing as well.

If it wasn't so damaging to your health, I'd probably smoke all the time - I love the smell. I might smoke a cigarette if I'm drunk, but otherwise - no (funny how I make an exception for drinking, even though it isn't good for you either - yes, I'm a hypocrite).

Some of my friends smoke, and I have no qualms going out with someone who smokes.

Funnily enough the majority of the gay people I know smoke. I do think its probably slightly more common in gay men than straight - perhaps due to the added likelihood of depression in youth so an increased need for a "coping mechanism"/self-soothing through nicotine? Then the addiction has just stuck into adulthood?

I think cigarette smoking is actually becoming rarer though, in both straight and gay people. Most people I see use E-cigs now which is good (a lot less harmful), it is definitely the "in" thing for smokers. ;p

I've never smoked. As for the more prevalent in the gay community thing it must be regional because I hardly even know any gay people who smoke--and a good portion of the people I know are gay. In thinking about it I really don't know a lot of smokers and the ones I do are straight.

I've never smoked but most of the LGBT people I know do. I don't think the two are related though

I smoke every now and then, but it's not more than a pack a month. Only in combination with alcohol and mostly during the summer, at festivals or parties.

I used to smoke. For me it's not a turn off if a person smokes..

I kinda LIKE that smell of smoke most people find .. disgusting. Ofcourse if it's not too strong. Well, that's just me.

Where I live a ton of people are into "vaping" because it doesn't stink and there are so many flavors.
I smoked when I was 18 for a couple months and again at 23 or so for a year. I always got djarum or nat shermans and never more than 2-3 a day.
Now I wouldn't touch them because I'm not trying to fit in.
