I finally asked about getting/seeing a therapist who specialises in LGBTQIA+

    Hi.

I just asked at the hospital I'm at, I just asked if I can get/see a therapist who specialises in LGBTQIA+/gender identity and such. I don't know the outcome yet but they're going to look into it so I guess that's good.

I'm nervous to actually talk about my feelings but tbh this particular staff member knew I thought I was trans....which helped the conversation flow better.... Obviously it's going to be hard talking to someone completely new and face to face about my feelings but all you amazing people are helping me feel more and more like it's the norm to be unsure and questioning who you are and how one identifies and that's ok.
I don't really feel all that confident still but I know I do need a therapist who specialises in this field and i guess I just took a chance and asked.... And it went alright actually.

I guess sometimes taking a chance and taking a leap of faith is a good thing.
Trust your heart. Do what feels right. But you never know unless you try.

I'm still trying to believe that myself but deep down I know it's true and I definitely know it's true for all of you.

That’s very good. I thought about asking my family doctor as well, if she can reccomend someone or send me to someone, but I’m really nervous to ask. I had this family doctor, since I was born. I am scared that they assign someone to me, who really does more harm than good. I haven’t been able to find anyone by myself who would specialize in LQBTQIA+. I did found some people who are similar to me and give advice on the topic, but they don’t live in my city and kinda scared to write them an email.

You wrote you live in Estonia and that there are plenty of homophobes. I also live in Central Europe, and I don't think it's a good idea to ask a GP, LGBT topics aren't common knowledge and even if the doctors are friendly for us, they just don't know where to direct you or what to advise. I would search for a local LGBT foundation and ask them, not a doctor, they will be much more knowledgeable about medical proffessionals in the area who work with LGBT people. I guess you already tried to google LGBT therapy, treatment of transgender people and the such? And looked on Estonian forums, subreddits etc.?

I have read articles about getting medical help and mental health issues for LGBT topics, especially for trans, really are not common knowledge here. Most trans people have moved to other countries, so the community is not very big. I also live in a small city, not in the capital. There are doctors who know about the topic, but it’s not common at all and there are even doctors who don’t write you all the nessesary hormones or medicaments if you go through the hormone treatment, just because they don’t know everything. Many times the patient has to educate the doctor on the subject. I am doubting on asking and you do have a point. Well I only found Estonian LQBT homepage and there are advisors there, so I guess I need to write to them about myself. I haven’t found any forums.

So I decided to send the advisor in the Estonian lqbt+ an email. It was so nerve wrecking and weird. I have only spoken about this in English in this forum, but to find the right words in my own language was scary. I don’t know why. I hope they are nice, but they seemed to be someone who is also like me. They have the advisors who have their own experiences with this subject.

Yeah, they are. These people are volunteers who are also somewhere on the rainbow.

For most trans people, receiving healthcare is a long commute. There aren't many doctors that lead transitions. I wouldn't be surprised if in case of Estonia it would be one or two doctors for the whole country, because Estonia is small. In my country it's about one or two doctors per province. And some provinces have no doctors and some with the largest cities more. Also a pro tip: when you already have all the documentation needed and are on hormones, take an attestation from the "trans doctor" what you take and in what doses, in what frequency etc. and show it to your GP - then they can prescribe you the same medications and it's closer and cheaper than commuting for receipts all the time.
Agreed. I mean, I haven't heard it about doctors who lead transitions, but with other doctors, true and it has also been my experience. It's a shame if you folks have to educate doctors who are supposed to lead the transitions.
    It's a good starting point.

Actually in Estonia doctors just write you digital receipts, so you don’t actually have to go to the doctors to get your receipts and everything that the doctor needs to know about what medication you take is already inside the patients story digitally (I don’t know how to say it in English). Estonia is pretty high tech country. Even though there are a lot of flaws too. For now I just keep these things in secret, but if I get to the point I actually want to go through with start doing hormone treatment, then I keep it in mind.

Oh that’s brilliant CharlieLuca, well done for being brave and asking. You got this! You could write down some things to help you remember. It will really help to talk to someone who can help xx

I’ve just read the thread thoroughly, it’s so hard for people in less tolerant or knowledgeable countries. UK is pretty tolerant for LGBTQIA +, especially from professional people such as drs and nurses, I’m sure it’s so much harder to just feel accepted if there is open anti LGBTQIA+ attitudes.
I remember being a student nurse in about 1994, and people were having male to female transitions, and it was quite new then I’d imagine. I wish all of you the best of luck with whatever is ahead.

I totally agree. Like I was talking to someone a while back, not on here. And being LGBTQIA+ was illegal in her country. I can't imagine how hard it is being in a country where it's illegal or frowned upon to be part of the LGBTQIA+ community when you are and at the same time battling with the political views/religious views of your country, your family, your own views ... Gosh all that must be horrible. I'm so sorry. And I wish you all the best too.

Congratulations @CharlieLuca I hope that things go really well for you.

@Rayland I do not know much about Estonia and especially healthcare there. Would you be able to private pay? If you could and are fairly close to Tallinn then would you be able take a ferry and travel to either Stockholm or Helsinki where it would be much easier to find someone with knowledge who would also be much more accepting?

The first gender reassignment surgery in the UK was in the early 50s. Transition was new in the 50s and 60s. In the 90s it was not common or even fully accepted (nor is it even now) but it was not new.

Oh okay, it was fairly innovative in the hospital I trained in in London. Maybe it was a new technique rather than the actual procedure.

Healtcare here is not very bad, but there are things, where it could be improved. I do have a bit of a medical backround and have worked in a hospital. Healtcare is mostly free too. You maybe only have to pay 5 euro doctor appoitment fee. Counselling and therapy are not free, maybe only, if doctor sees that you need it and sends you to one. For students in school, there is also psyhologist available for free, but they mostly help you if you have trouble with school. Travelling is not really an option for me right now and I also can’t pay privately, since I am financially dependent on others and a student who has bunch of responsibilities here. I’m a bit of a tough case. It takes about one hour to get to Tallinn, where I live.

Maybe it was becoming more widespread and less of a thing for pioneers. The first things of any kind are pioneer and still years pass until they reach everyday life. Sometimes even decades. Let's take computers. First computers predate back to WWII, but they became more widespread several decades later, because the techniques improved and they became more reliable and also cheaper. It goes for pretty much all inventions. Now AI is taking first steps, but it will still take some time for the technology to improve, become more reliable, cheaper and familiar enough for people to want to buy it.

The commute itself is not really a problem. I used to live in Tallinn too. The problem is that I am keeping these things a secret, so I can’t just suddenly go for a trip, withouth telling where and why. I have no need to go to the capital right now, if I need to go, then I also need to plan these things ahead.
