So, I think I want to take the next step and start HRT, but I don't know where to start. What should I expect? How do I go about starting? I live in Colorado where I don't need a letter from a therapist depending on the doctor. Thanks for the help. This is all so terrifying.

Just because you don't need it, doesn't mean you shouldn't see a therapist. I would highly recommend trying to find one (just google "gender therapist Colorado") which is the easiest way to find a referral. If there's some kind of institute or an equivalent, that's usually the best place. Googling "LGBT friendly endocrinologist" is probably the safest way to find somewhere to go, apart from a therapist.
