It's definitely a possibility. I think she's also trying to look out for me. My style isn't traditionally feminine. She's warned me about how I could get mistaken for a guy and get harassed. My mom has short hair and isn't traditionally feminine, her words not mine, and she was referred to as a 'tranny' once. I think that sort of thing sticks with you. My hair is very high maintenance, not just because it swells. I can't put any oil on it, excluding the essential oil in my shampoo, and or use conditioner. I have to be careful about some shampoos too. These cause it to swell as well. My hair also soaks up most oil and tends to get very dry. It has to be braided right away. If I go bed without braiding, it'll be all over my head when I wake up. Progressively getting worse the more the more this continues. It's a pain in the @$$. I've even been considering locking my hair up again. I'm sorry you had to experience that.
