Hi all! 30 yr old lesbian here looking for some conversation (so tired of being stuck at home). I enjoy music, art and reading/writing—particularly lgbt+ content. I love learning new things and obsessing about things I already love (Musicals, nerdy history documentaries, drag race—to name a few). Looking forward to meeting new folks!
desertskye.....Hello and a great big LGBTQ+ welcome to Empty Closets! There are a number of subforums here on EC...why don't you check them out and then feel free to join in the conversations! We will do our best to be a support and a place to vent when you need it! We are so glad that you have found us here on EC! .....David
Hi! In the same boat...minus the musicals...because they remind me of the horrible dress I had to wear in my youth performance of The Music Man. LOL
Hi! Last year I went into a very deep dive of British History. There is this great show called Time Team where a group of archeologists do a different dig in the UK every episode. It is very soothing and interesting and there are so many episodes. That spurred me into reading and watching things British Historian Lucy Worsley has done and others. I tend to find the Iron Age most fascinating. What about you?
I mostly like C16 and C17 British history, but will quite happily watch almost any history documentary. I’ve seen quite a few episodes of Time Team! I like Lucy Worsley’s work too and have recently been reading a book by Ian Mortimer on Regency Britain. He’s written several books called “A Time Traveller’s Guide to...” and I really like this one, so will probably read all the others now.
Haha! I can only imagine. I was in Fiddler on the Roof in high school and had very scratchy skirts and blouses, but no traumatic texture memories have kept me away from loving musicals! Are you watching season 13 of drag race? Who’s your front runner?
Hi desertskye! I'm new here too and while I don't usually "love" musicals, I got really into a show called Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist - which I think of like Glee but for a tech startup instead of a high school. I went to a local DragCon a couple years ago and got to see RuPaul and a bunch of other famous drag stars (all of whom I'm unfamiliar with unfortunately) but it was such a great time! I miss going to things like that!
To those of you talking about musicals.....I've been in just about every major "old style" musical. (Sound of Music, Camelot, Music Man, etc.) The worst for costume was the three times I did "The King and I" I played the king all three times and had to wear what amounted to a fancy diaper! On top of that, the material was a very fancy brocade and itched like no other! No shirt, no pants, no shoes...just an itchy diaper all night long and I had to dance in it! .....David
I just looked the books up! I'm going to check them out. I recently ordered Lucy Worsley's new book about Queen Victoria after I watched a virtual talk she gave about a month ago. I'm looking forward to reading it. I generally love learning about history but I feel like in these times it seems like I want to delve in even more. I work in the political/nonprofit field in the states and sometimes the only way I can wrap my head around what is happening in today's society is by learning from the past.
I have seen Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist! I haven't loved it as much now that it's back with new episodes as I did last year, but I need to give it another try. Oh my gosh I would love to go to DragCon. What a party. I've been feeling pretty low the last few weeks and have been watching a lot of Trixie Mattel and Katya's show on YouTube. Have you watched it?
Yes, reflecting on the past can be helpful in gaining a sense of perspective. Sounds good. Let me know what you think of the Ian Mortimer books. I like learning about historical figures, but find social history particularly fascinating and Mortimer’s books look at live across the social spectrum.
OMG Trixie and Kaya has me laughing nonstop right now. Further proving that I need to spend more time on YouTube lol.
I know right? I'm slowly working my way through each episode. I had a crazy work week this week and when I was finally done today I turned it on and hid my phone in another room. Such a good way to unwind--laugh at fellow weirdos.
