Facts are facts. India's population as of 2014 was 1.27 billion people.

The chart that I referenced was ONLY the Muslim portion of that population, and India is still has the second largest Muslim population, by country, in the world.

Aside from the legal and moral arguments, I'm inclined to believe this policy will serve as recruiting propaganda for extremist groups like Daesh and Al-Qaeda and I fear it will make the US more vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

I agree that extremists groups like Daesh, al-Qaeada, al-Shabab, etc will use this policy as recruiting propaganda. Frankly, though, they are anti-Western in their very nature and will use/twist whatever the US policy may be to their perceived advantage. I respectfully disagree that this policy will make the US more vulnerable to terrorist attacks in that respect - it's really a wash.

I actually hope you are right and I am wrong. I don't want to be right about this.

99% of Yemen is Muslim. Look at the percentages of Muslims in each country, not the total number. Trump and Guiliani have both called it a Muslim ban.

    ---------- Post added 1st Feb 2017 at 05:35 PM ----------

    85% in Iraq

    ---------- Post added 1st Feb 2017 at 05:36 PM ----------

    99.4% in Iran

    ---------- Post added 1st Feb 2017 at 05:37 PM ----------

Muslims are only 18% of the Indian population. India is not viewed as a Muslim country. Indonesia does have a high percentage of Muslims but the stereotype of there isn't "Islamic country" by most Americans. It's not in the Middle East. The ban left out certain countries but that does not mean it isn't a Muslim ban.

    ---------- Post added 1st Feb 2017 at 05:44 PM ----------

That's not how statistics work to make a country Muslim majority or not Muslim majority. You have to take into account how many people there are in the country and then find the percentage of people that are Muslim. There are more Muslims there because there are a lot of people in India.

For example in the USA we have a lot of people and probably more total Jewish people than just the area of Israel but the USAis not a majority Jewish nation because the population is mostly made of Christians.

    So?

The travel freeze is being intentionally mislabeled as a 'Muslim ban' not a 'Ban against countries with Muslim majorities.'

If it were an actual ban against Muslims, it wouldn't be a 120 day freeze and it would naturally have to include countries with the largest Muslim populations, wouldn’t it?

Trump is the person who came up with the phrase "Muslim ban" and Rudy Guiliani said it was based on religion this past week.

Trump only used that phrase early in his campaign and then clarified that he intended to institute strict vetting of people wishing the enter the US from countries known for or strongly suspected of training, harboring, and exporting terrorists. No one in the Trump Administration has called it a "Muslim ban." (Besides the fact that it's not a ban.)

Please show us the quote where Rudy Guiliani (not a member of the Administration, but the way) actually said that the Executive Order was based on religion.

How does that make sense? By your logic China is a Christian country.

Just 14% of Indians are Muslim and only 50% of Nigerians are Muslim so it is ridiculous to just look at numbers

Your President is the one who used the term ¨Muslim ban¨ so he needs to own it.

This is the statement on his website dated December 7, 2015:

But Muslims in countries where they operate are not universally anti-Western. The usefulness of ordinary people being alienated by the US is invaluable as a recruitment tool for Islamic extremists.

Yes, they will twist things no matter what. But when this policy needs little to no twisting to seem egregiously unfair and targets Muslims in rhetoric and reality, then that leaves even more people receptive to those ideas.

It's absolutely not a wash when the margin for alienation and radicalisation is so narrow and the margin for harm is enormous, if citizens of Iraq, Syria and other states feel America is an enemy to their religious community and consequently lash back.

And without any capacity to demonstrate that America's safety is improved, a belief you have merely asserted throughout this thread, one really wonders what you think you're getting out of this.

Also you cannot simultaneously applaud Trump for committing to his campaign promise to bar Muslims from the United States and also decline to identify it as a ban that targets Muslims. You get one or the other.
