Donald Trump: 'Christianity will have power' if I'm president - Business Insider

Basically he spouts some bullshit about how Christians have no power in this country and he won't shop at places that don't say "Merry Christmas". Just another thing to add to his list of crazy things.

And yet again this will only help his polling numbers. *sigh*

Ah yes, because it's not like they have a church on every corner as it is. As we all know Paganism is just rampant these days.

This is sarcasm by the way.

I don't get the intense wailing by few about "Merry Christmas." If you're Christian, say it. If you're not, cool. It's not illegal and not even frowned upon as far as I can tell. But catering to this victim mentality is a sort of brain-hack and I think Trump knows it. He aims to keep supporters by maintaining this besieged feeling, touting himself as the heroic defender. If Muslim fear won't work, fear of the Chinese and Mexicans might. If those don't work, it's fear of *gasp* separating church from state as if they really shouldn't be together. I don't know what he's referring to when he says "Make America great again" because the people who made it great in the first place were little or nothing like him.

Trump's strategy is to win over the anti-liberal crowd.

And in the process he's going to alienate any voter that isn't on the reactionary right wing.

To address his actual statement, it seems like more evidence to me that some evangelicals within this country think that because the US is a secular nation, not everyone here is a Christian and that secular values are embraced by many that somehow Christians are "oppressed" leading to the absolutely ridiculous "war on christmas"

    So Iran but Christian.

Gotta love that commitment to freedom, liberty and democracy.

EDIT: And this obsession with being oppressed really grinds my gears too. Maybe they should ask religious minorities in Russia, Jews, and those refugees they so demonize what oppression looks like to them.

    They might actually learn something.

If this numbskull wins over the masses, I'll be even more desperate to leave. Heck, I might even try to cross the Canadian border via the sewer system. Yuck.

It's quite disturbing too that my dad thinks he'll make a good president. My dad is a pastor.

You should come visit small town midwest at some point. Damn near every lawn had "Keep the 'Christ' in 'Christmas'" signs. It actually makes me quite upset, and me and my mom had a long talk about it in November. She cried. But that's nothing new.

So do they feel a little relief knowing that a big chunk of their town feels the same way? One can imagine so.

Ironically enough, I as a generally non-Christian theist feel there isn't enough religious significance to it anymore either. But rather than be a blowhard about it, I prefer to try separating Christmas from the advertising machine and recognize it on my own. Because outside of the meaning people ascribe to it, it's just a day. Nobody "owns" it, and certainly not The Donald.

Everyone calm down. This man will never win in the general election. He has no policy ideas other than, "im going to be so great your head will spin."
The vague policies he does put forward are completely unconstitutional and against everything or founding fathers faught for. Hes switched parties 5 times. He makes clinton flip flops look like nothing

It won't be anywhere near that bad. We have a constitution.

This is a group of people that believes the phrase "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion" doesn't apply to them, that the 14th Amendment doesn't apply to anyone they don't like, that religious tests for holding public office are acceptable if only applied to non Christians and that the 1st Amendment's free speech and religion sections only apply to them.

These people have no respect for the constitution, authoritarians are like that.

I swear if Trump wins the GOP vote, I'll be convinced that the republican party doesn't actually know what the Constitution is.

What I love about america is the freedom to worship whatever religion people choose. That's going against freedom you Americans enjoy and I don't know much about American politics but I thought that there should be a separation between the church and state

Luckily, just because some people are against it doesn't mean it's obsolete.

We already have a religious test for office. It's called the voters. If the voters don't like your religion (or lack of it), it will cause you a serious problem if not destroy your candicacy. The only people who are electable for president are Christians and Jews. While there are Muslims and atheists in state legislatures, no Muslim or atheist will be president, at least not for the next 12-16 years.

Even amongst Christians, religious tolerance is not where it needs to be. For example, Romney actually had to get on the air and defend religious freedom and teach basic civics to people who were hostile to him over his Mormonism.

Christianity already has power--undue power--in American politics. We need look no further than the history of LGBT rights, the painfully slow progress of which is entirely due to Christianity.
