Such as when you are looking at photos or in a dream, do you imagine that you can smell things in that photo or dream? It's odd because it can feel so real even though I know it's fake. How about you? Often I do it without thinking. So I will look at a picture of a damp room and it's almost as if I'm actually stood there because I can almost smell it and it seems oddly real for a quick moment.
Yes! For me, it's smoke. If I see a picture of a grill or camp fire, I can smell it: the hickory, the charcoal. It's so weird because I know it isn't real, but it convinces my brain somehow.
I don't know dreams are dreams so I experience all senses in them. I can smell and hear things for a split second associated with a photo.
I have a vivid imagination and find that I can smell rain, metal and smokey smells really easily from looking at photos. It lasts for a second or two but it definitely happens!
I think it's more our connotations to what is shown in a dream/picture. Past experiences in those situations. Like when you're looking at a picture of people in a pool, you can smell the chlorine, or when you look at a picture of the ocean, you smell the saltiness, and feel the sand beneath your feet. Or like Estelle said, when looking at a picture of a campfire. You've been around pools/campfires before, so the smell and even the sound is familiar to you, and your memories light up your senses in a way, if that makes sense?
Absolutely, who doesn't, sometimes I can imagine my mums meatballs and pasta and taste it, call me wierd but I think its normal!
Definitely especially if reminds of something I enjoyed doing like baking I can smell the goodies baking
