That’s great! This is what Facebook needs. More privacy.
Weird question, when you guys update EC will the website be down for a while, while you update stuff etc?
Lemony’s question brings up a new question for me:
Will all the old posts be transferred to the new? My posts are a good way for me to see my progress, and they are only here. Plus I look at old posts before answering user’s questions, so I can get a better sense of who they are and what they’ve asked before, to better shape my response.
Every post from the original EC, all the way back to 2004, is here in this current version, and the same will be true when we upgrade. That's one of the reasons the upgrade takes forever to plan, and a long time (I think it was about 48 hours when we upgraded the last time around).
As for the update process, likely there will be two separate ones: The discussion community (which is the really huge one) and the front end, where the articles are. The front end will probably happen before the forums are updated, simply because it's less work. But both are on the roadmap.
When you do plan for the upgrade could you please let us know what date it is.
A chat room maybe?
That's actually probably the very first enhancement you'll see. Sooner than you might think.
We'll definitely announce it. An upgrade for the discussion forums is barely in the "we know we need to do this" stage, so no planning or work to do it has even started. It's likely end of this year at the very earliest.
A bit late to the party, but I just want to add my two cents here.
I love the forum the way it is. So it's good that you're basically trying some tech enhancements while maintaining its essence.
I love the EC community the way it is — conversations here don't happen at light speed without any thought process among people who are full of hot air. This place is completely different from social media and from most one can find online. Therefore, I don't think there should be an EC profile on any social networking sites. Anyone who wants to get here will get here. This is a sanctuary, an LGBT+ sanctuary. Plus, a poorly maintained social media profile generates a bad image (and a good maintenance of a profile takes a lot of work) — the forum I've used the most in my life tried to have its social media endeavour a few years ago and it took roughly a year for all the profiles to become ghost towns.
As for the front end, while I like the design and *love* the two pictures (they're so cute!), it clearly needs some updates. If I recall correctly, some of the instructions for new members were out of date when I first joined or at least didn't make a lot of sense to me at the moment. And you have a lot of great written pieces in the forums that you could include as resources in the front end page or simply link them from there. I remember that, before I joined, I had to spend hours browsing the forums in order to find the hidden gems that I needed to read.
Regardless of all this, the important thing is that this wonderful site keeps existing for many, many years.
I've just remembered some more things I love about the way it is.
No adverts and no videos! It means each page doesn't take half an hour to load on my old Mac!
Sorry for not having this forum updated this month yet! I’ve been feeling under the weather and haven’t been online as much as I hoped! It’s been really interesting to hear your continued feedback though.
Don’t worry, I don’t think we’re currently at a stage that we need adverts or anything like that! And any video content would be elsewhere on the website, not the forum.
Hi there! Just posting to add that I also would love a chat room feature!
We have just added a Chatroom! However, the chatroom is only available to Full Members. Once you've been a member for at least 2 weeks and have made at least 50 posts, you may apply for Full Membership.
Oh whoops! Well wonderful, thank you!
The chatroom "notifier" indicates number of people currently in the chatroom. I wonder if it might be possible to indicate in some way "new messages since you last looked" (I do not know if it could be coded or how difficult it would be)
Hmm this is an excellent idea!
I do not know how difficult this would be to code. Currently if a person is on ones ignore list whatever they post is left out of the "new posts" list and if they respond to something you are watching normally you do not get a notification. However, the sub-forum still gets highlighted that there is a new post and if I remember correctly if that person quotes you then you will also get notified.
edited to add: just to be clear, the request is to stop those notifications and highlights
I like the podcast idea! I think that would be a really cool feature to have.
We are currently working on updating our resource pages and will include information, written material found on the forum. We are also looking at adding some additional pieces of information that members might find helpful or useful.
