Could salamanders be the key to SRS?

    An understandably bizarre title! Let me explain.

    I'm pretty sure that salamanders have the ability to regrow limbs and other body parts that they have lost. In theory, could this be adapted to suit humans? Furthermore, could the human adaptation be further tinkered with to grow body parts that an organism wasn't born with? Of course, this could apply to SO many different areas of physiology and biology (heck, even neurology!), but in transgender terms, could this see trans folk have real genitalia of their preference?

    Come on, biologists - I challenge you! :icon_bigg

    This is interesting actually. I have a pet Axolotl named Cas. Axolotls are one of the species of salamanders that can regrow limbs and even parts of their brain. Axies are being studied by biologists and doctors to look into repair for spinal injuries and the like. Axies also are neotonic, and don't ever grow up, which is kinda cool.

    The difficult part of this idea would be the tinkering to grow an body part that wasnt there before. But hey, there have been some pretty awesome things we can do with science, so who knows.

    What about clown fish? I've heard that they switch sexes in order to mate in case their mate dies or something like that. I wonder if that could somehow be adapted to fit humans. Without the whole dead mating partner thing of course.

    @Lady Diana

    Your Brian Cox quote sounds totally ripped off from Carl Sagan :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

    But yes, science is amazing. Stuff like this makes me wish I took biology at school too.

    I doubt it. If you really think about it, it's highly illogical. Humans cannot change their gentials like clownfish or hermaprodite organisms. They would probably have to be a genetically altered human.

    Have you not seen The Amazing Spider Man ( 1 )?
    It can only lead to disaster.

    Lol it was only a disaster because the plot of the movie called for it. Real world applications could be much more positive, supposing it could be done in the first place.

    Am I a terrible person for thinking it was about cutting other people's junk to use as transplants at first?

    And what happens when the person ends up not being transgender? They would have no use for this ability.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it is impossible to bestow such abilities in fully grown humans.
