Domestic abuse behavior usually evolves and as your grow in a relationship with it’s easy to normalize it. It can start out with lighthearted sarcasm to “poking fun at you”, to overall disrespect, to verbal abuse, to emotional abuse then it gets physical. Listen to your therapist. Get out because it won’t get better and he’ll use anyway he can to prevent you from getting the kids or any settlement. Good luck!
