Ah, but that's the thing. It's not 4X3 at all. It's 4^3 (so four to the POWER three!).

It would be four times three if all of your four partners had three partners previous, all of which were virgins. And that's possible.
But for calculation's sake, the program assumes that, if your previous partners had four partners, those partners would be somewhat similar to themselves, and have had roughly the same average of partners. Hence using a power.

It's kind of like population dynamics. 100 generations of people having two kids each doesn't give you 200 people (otherwise humanity still wouldn 't have populated even a tiny village). It gives you 2^100, which is more than the current population of the planet!

It exposes you to the same NUMBER of people as there are on the planet, though. Yes, most of those are the same person.

    (continued from above):
It actually should just tell you "potential STDs exposures you've experienced", rather than "people". If you do this in a city like, say, NYC, then sure. You're exposed to a subset of100,000 people a million times each. But each of those people was slightly different each time they "contributed to the pool", and had a chance of transmitting something.

The fact that the same person is in there multiple times is actually BAD, in this context. STDs are already more prevalent in the gay community, so it just gives a careless individual more routes towards you.
