I'm deeply saddened by this, but i'm also angry. Temer (the "president" that took the power in a coup against Dilma Rousseff) spent more than 6 million in maintenance at Palácio da Alvorada because it "wasn't cozy enough", to mention just one of the times the government spent unecessary money, before telling the population that we need to cut off expenses because of the "financial crisis".

The museum suffered from lack of money for years now, which led to lack of preparation for disasters (crimes) like this. The fire hydrants near the museum didn't even work!

We lost so many valuable and irreplaceable artifacts. The full extent of the losses is still being analyzed, but, according to BBC, we may have lost, Luzia, the oldest human fossil found in the country, among other important and unique pieces.

    This is a crime.

It's also a loss of important history! History that is now forever lost and can not be brought back.

I am sorry for the loss that your country is experiencing!

    Thanks Seraphim Moon.

Now they sent money to help in the "recovery". In other words, they had money, but let's leave priceless artifacts at risk, we can fix it later if something goes wrong (note: You can't, since many pieces are now ashes).

    I'm really mad at this.

It is such a shame that a government would not ensure that priceless and irreplaceable collections are not better protected, and the building was allowed to deteriorate to the point that it did. It looks like that there were warnings on the risk of fire. It's mind-boggling.

It's a cultural loss for all of humanity, just as when ISIS destroyed Palmyra. Some things are in the world's interest to protect.

Austerity and corruption are a terrible combination. It's an unforgiveable loss, one for which President Temer is not solely resonsible - it lies at the hands of the entire political class. A corrupt Congress, a sluggish, oversized Cabinet, which oversees byzantine methods of bureaucratic rent-seeking, and gargantuan state-owned enterprises, which barely qualify as anything more than slush funds for the politically well-connected, are a larger drain on Brazil's economy than its cultural institutions.

Brazil's lost so much irreplaceable public property and cultural heritage for the sake of mismanagement and corruption. It should spark outrage everywhere.

Oh, you are right. I mention Temer because he is an issue too, but i know he isn't "the big evil" to blame for these things (and there are many people who blame just the president, as if one person could be solely responsible for the entire machine that is the system).
