bloody noses while I sleep?

I have been getting random nose bleeds often and usually it's while I'm sleeping at night, I'll wake up with one early in the morning and have to stay awake to make it stop as best as I can. I'm wondering if this happens with anyone else and maybe some ideas as to why it happens so often. I have been keeping track of how often it happens so I can see when the last one before that one was.It happened to me last week again. But it happens a couple times a month or a couple times every other month. I'd appreciate any inputs or comments, thanks!

I've always been a victim of frequent nosebleeds, especially at night. There are a number of things that could be going on, like dryness of the environment, or maybe a weak blood vessel in your nose. You could be picking while you sleep and not know it. It could be a seasonal thing too.

I know someone who has nosebleeds from his right nostril every night during sleep, because his nose is slightly bent leaving his left nostril is smaller and restricted, so essentially all his breathing is done through the right one. He went to an ear/nose/throat specialist (for something unrelated) and they confirmed that the most likely reason for his nightly nosebleed was because his right nostril was getting a lot more use than it should be and was drying out.

Probably not applicable to you, but it is an example of a known cause.

My sister is a swimmer, and she gets frequent nosebleeds. I believe that there is some direct correlation between her amphibious habits and her chronic nosebleeds. I have yet to discover it.

But if you have allergies, that could be the reason why you're getting nosebleeds.

I've had that problem before. I've noticed it usually happens if my mom forgets to lower the heat at night. My room gets very hot and dry very quickly. Do you notice you wake and the room seems warm and dry?

I used to get bloody noses a lot, because I was on a decongestant which really dried my nose out. I was told to put Neosporin in my nose. Get some of the clear, gel kind (the original) and put it on a q-tip and get it up in there. haha. It really helps to heal the nose if it is extremely dry. If it's heat related, you can get small humidifiers for your room.

If it doesn't stop, please go to the doctor!

Thanks everyone! I do have some allergies, I didn't think of that. I think the room is warm when I wake up with a bloody nose, but I don't think I really pay any attention when I wake up so I can't be sure, but that may also be why or at least partly, didn't think of that either. haha. I have also been thinking of getting a humidifier just to see if it'll help or stop them. I've also heard that if I boil water before going to bed, it should help too.

We have a pot of water on the stove through the time we are home (obviously, not at night. haha.) It does help. Also - it's winter, that's a big part of it.

I don't get full-on nosebleeds, but occasionally I've had some dried blood under my nose. Only a few times, but it's as curious as it is a nuisance.

If you live somewhere with high elevation (Colorado for example, is called the Mile-High state, and is also a dry desert) it may contribute to frequent nosebleeds. If you have a humidifier handy you might try it out.

    ^This.

Nosebleeds have lots of causes but during the winter and in desert areas, it's often because the nasal passages have gotten too dry.

This time of year in the northern hemisphere tends to have a lot of dry, cold air. And in older heating systems, there's no way to control the humidity level, so this further dries out the air.

Adding a cool mist humidifier using distilled water helps quite a bit. It will add more moisture to the air and help keep your nasal passages moist at night. Also, after you wash your face for bed, putting a little moisturizer in your nasal passages (or petroleum jelly if you prefer) will also help during the winter.

When I get frequent nose bleeds I smear a bit Vaselene up my nose and this seems to cut down on the number of bleeds. I think my nosebleeds are as a result of me being a bit dehydrated because I take strong pain killers for a long standing shoulder injury.

Dryness could be a factor. There are gels you can put in your nose to keep it moist.

Also, you could have a weak blood vessel in your nose. My son had one and had it cauterized and the nosebleeds stopped.
