I recently started using audio tapes again. Anyone else still using them?

You mean those cassette tapes? Gee, I found some during spring cleaning this year, probably my grandmother's stuff or someone else. Can't really use them now as there is no more reader/recorder around. So I guess nope, not using them anymore.

I have to use video tapes at my workplace. There are some things that are still on Beta tape... We have been working on digitizing those now though. I don't use audio tape as much.

Haha. I still have 3 decks. I just started using them again now to record some stuff for my band. They sound quite good.

Most of mine are 20+ years old and barely work.

I do have an extensive collection of vinyl records, though.

    Heh. Tapes.

Personally I like to pretend I can tell the difference between .flac or .m4a and .mp3. Considering my sound equipment, I doubt I actually can

I had a cassette player in my old car for listening to Hootie and the Blowfish and the Disney Tarzan soundtrack. It didn't work quite perfectly but the music was worth it.

Audio tapes, no, but I do have some movies on VHS, mainly because I found some movies where the DVD version has cuts that the VHS version leaves in.

I use video tapes once in a while for recording stuff for film class.

Yep, I play them in the car, 'cause the CD player skips, and it's an old car, so I buy tapes at thrift stores/yard sales, and some sound great; others have faded. Not a great format for the long haul! I've found fun odd things: The best of Lou Reed, The Cure, The Go-Gos, early Elvis Costello...

I also have a huge vinyl collection, and love my turntable...I wanna get a dedicated digital to analog circuit, so I can make studio-grade copies in digital format, though I have to save up a bit; I think Tascam has a machine for about $500, give or take.

I really don't like the compressed, flat sound of MP3s...OK in a car with the windows down, but not so good on a nice stereo.

I have a box of them lying around somewhere, but my old walkman doesn't really work too well anymore and I'm scared that I'll break it if I keep using it

Bump. I don't normally bump threads but I thought this would be a good post because there's not many VHS tape threads on here. I LOVE VHS tapes! I still have hundreds of them at home. I would die to watch the original Land Before Time movies again. I have all of the ones from the original up until Journey To Big Water (except for Secret of Saurus Rock).

    Those movies are my childhood!

I have many others but there are way too many to name here.

No. But I still use CDs and CD players despite everyone switching to streaming. I still have an old iPod I use too.

Although my car does have a casette player as well as CDs. I should try to find an old casette.

    Ah, 2015, a simpler time

For a while I had a 4 track cassette recorder I borrowed from my schools music department, had to give it back but I've got all these tapes now and really want to get one of my own

Not now, But I'd like to use them on my future car. If I buy a car I will definitely use them. They are lovely. I love old cars and I like to use cassettes on them.

Back in the 90s, my mom took me and my brother to a music store. My brother got a tape of The Verve just for the song Bittersweet Symphony (I can't hear that song without thinking of him now). Naturally, I insisted on getting one too. I knew very little about music, so I got a tape by one of the few bands I knew: the soundtrack to The Kids Are Alright, by The Who. To this day it is the only cassette I have.

I can assure you that there's no credible argument to be made that cassette tapes or VHS tapes are in any way superior to their digital counterparts. For cassettes, the signal to noise, distortion, flutter due to tape transport, and degradation of quality over multiple plays make them a pretty limited resource. For video, at least you don't have the flutter (it's all digital) but you do have dropouts and very low resolution (substantially lower than DVD, which is, in turn, substantially lower than HD, let alone 4K).

There's a theoretical argument to be made for vinyl, though it's a flimsy one, that's too nerdy to really get into. And the same theoretical argument can be made for 15ips reel-to-reel tape, but nobody uses that.
