What do you think about a day to commemorate Oct. 14, 1977, when a cream pie was pushed into the face of anti-gay bigotry? I think it should be broadened to include all bigotry, authoritarianism and all ways people are oppressed worldwide. Gather 'round to learn how it was inspired... https://www.out.com/today-gay-histo...y-history-gay-activist-pies-anita-bryant-face I don't condone or want violence or anything that would hurt anyone, but a cream pie is safe and how he got it up there undetected was a miracle so it must have been divine.
Interesting read. The video link was something. I thought the same thing about how it - the pie - went undetected. Right away, she breaks into that TV style of prayer. Her campaigns were offensive. The most offensive part was the part about protecting children. She doesn't understand how things work. This is how she kept herself relevant after barely missing becoming Miss America. Who knows if she would have still become an anti-LGBT+ advocate had she won the pageant and been kept busy from the events and endorsements.
Lol yes, such a phony but like I've said, the gullible bought her BS and they are doing it again today with the same old lie, "What about the children, why won't you send us money and vote for us to protect the children from the gays/trans trying to steal and send your children to HELL?" What idiots would believe her lies or all the lies being spread again today? Apparently enough because it's working again so it should become an international day of awareness and to never forget. Thanks for spreading the word on social media and the news!
But is that an acceptable tactic, a man forcibly shoving something into a woman's face? There must have been a few moments of extreme fear as she tried to figure out what was going on. Obviously we think she's wrong, but would it be acceptable in the other direction?
This is a great point. I don't think the genders matter as much as being shocked by anything that's an assault. The pie was an assault and so is being shoved to the ground in the middle of a big city if someone is after a wallet or a purse. This is the way this person chose to make his point and get it publicized. I followed the links on WIki and it mentions that another pie was found and that the man up at the front table put it into the face of the person who had the second pie.
Interesting, I don't see it about gender at all. What is the other direction? This was someone lying, bearing false witness and causing great harm to lots of people for no valid reason. People have assaulted and killed gays, depression and suicide, which is incited and encouraged by her campaign and all that have been inspired by it. For her to pie me for loving and supporting the least among us doesn't make sense. Who is our message of equality and self actualization causing harm? If they want to pie someone supporting equality for all, go for it and the recipient will probably see the humor in it, unlike her type needing to pray about it lol. All that being said, I don't encourage covert cream pie throwing irl, however, I see nothing wrong commemorating the day and event and the reason. I'd much rather see this than people using guns and other weapons. Put down the guns and pick up a pie? Maybe it'll only work in the US haha.
And the plot thickens. Was there a 2nd pieman? (for those unfamiliar with US history, it's a reference to a 2nd gunman during the JFK assasination. We've got such great history don't we? )
It could be done voluntarily, like going in a dunk tank, to raise money and awareness, but I'm just being goofy really.
I was addressing @Colm 's first sentence in his post as to whether it's acceptable for a man to forcibly shove a pie into a woman's face. Thomas Higgins was the guy who put the pie in Anita Bryant's face. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Lawrence_Higgins See the 4th paragraph. It was her husband who lashed out by putting the second pie into that other person's face.
lol it's not commemorating her as a person but the day that guy did something memorable. Also to never forget the ongoing, coordinated and well-funded lies to destroy us. It was the start of the "religious right" and their major influence in politics that has held us back ever since. They use the lies and fear of us to win elections, it's reprehensible. Countless people have and will continue to suffer depression and die because of the work she and her type did. Not only have they held LGBTQ+ people back for decades, but society in general with all the ways they've stopped progress and made us regress. We could have had universal healthcare and many other things most of us want by now if they didn't abuse us to gain power.
There is a lot of truth here. There is also a big elephant in the room in Florida that can't be ignored and is causing trouble today, in 2023.
Anita Bryant’s bisexual granddaughter married a woman in 2021. https://www.them.us/story/anita-bryant-lesbian-granddaughter
With that said I would love to make some holiday/event out of it. Also on October 14th of this year there will be a solar eclipse.
Lol sounds good, are you on social media to spread the word? I'm not so it probably won't get much traction lol. I could see students on the UW campus running with it, unless they have gone anti-LGBTQ+ along with so many in that sad state.
Am I alone here? I have never found Carol Burnett or her entourage funny. Their humor is baseline silly. The oranges she has on her dress are the only funny thing.
Sorry @Tightrope, I love Carol Burnett and her entourage - especially Tim Conway - extremely funny. But then, I LOVE corny humor. QR
