i know some other trans men use rolled-up socks to pack, but i’ve never seen any specifics. do certain lengths of sock work best? is it even worth it to pack? how do you keep it from falling out when walking around?

Unless you're big and tall, I don't reccommend using crew socks (unless they are the thin women's kind, the one's with the designs on them). I made that mistake when I had the chance to pack in college years ago, because of the pants I was wearing and the socks I was wearing there were thicker it probably looked like I had a boner. Feel free to laugh about it, it's funny to me even! So I'm suggesting ankle socks, when my parents were gone for a weekend those worked for me. I've tried a couple different methods of arrangement/rolling. So far my favorite is to lay one sock flat and roll it into a cylinder, then slip that into the other sock. For context I'm pretty short, 5'2", and that's a huge part of why the thick crew socks didn't work for me.

The easiest way to ensure it doesn't end up in your pant leg is to pin it to your underwear. A couple of safety pins should work fine. Some people use magnets, where one is sown into the underwear and one goes in the packer.

Don't let my opinion of packing influence you, the best way to figure out if it's for you is to try it when you're by yourself and see how it makes you feel for a couple months. When I did get to pack and did it properly, I felt like a giddy little boy. I was so happy and couldn't stop smiling. For once I felt good about myself and happier with my body for the first time since puberty.

I think Uppercasechase has a good run down of the process on youtube and there's a plethora of other tutorials and tips on there too. I hope that helps, and good luck dude!

No problem! If you have any other questions about it let me know, if I don't know I'll try to find someone who does.

is there absolutely any way to pack when you’re on your period? is it best to just wear baggy pants and wait it out?

Hmm good question, I'm not entirely sure but I'll do my best to find out. I think part of it is going to be how you take care of it- tampons, pads, cups, etc.

Ok, so using pads, you may have to use women's undies or men's briefs (not boxer briefs, plain briefs) underneath whatever underwear you actually want. That way the pad has somewhere to stick to (men's undies are notoriously difficult to do that with, briefs are the most managable there). Then you just pin the packer to the outside pair of underwear.
