I’ve seen both terms used on this forum so, is the a difference between Transgender and Transexual? And if so what is it?
Transsexual is an older term, but they generally mean the same thing. Some folk say it's offensive, but I think that really depends on the person; if someone prefers to call themselves a transsexual as opposed to transgender, they have every right to make that choice. If there are any differences, it's beyond my knowledge--this is just what I've gathered from trans people I know.
I understand that the term transgender is more widely use everywhere nowadays. As BiGemini87 said, transsexual is considered to have a negative connotation for some people (not for everybody, though). Personally, I'm more used to say transgender. In case of doubt, you can simply opt for trans.
Transsexual termin is outdated and has negative connotation, because transsexual indicated that the person had gone through gender affirming surgery, but not all transgender people go through surgery and you still are trans, even withouth any surgeries. Transgender term is seen more suitable, since it is an umbrella term and includes everyone under transgender umbrella and transsexual is not an umbrella termin. Transgender is just more inclusive and affirming. The best thing is not to call someone transsexual, unless they themselves have told you that they are transsexual.
Great question! And helpful replies. My take on it is that “sex” is something we do, and “gender” is who we are. I hope anyone who talks with me will let me know their preference.
