So I want to vent. I wanted to take birth control pills, and after just one tablet, I had the worst 24 hours in my whole life plus it destroyed my week. It made my mental and emotional health deteriorate so quickly, I felt normal and fine before the pill. Apparently I'm the only person on this whole plant to experience this, so nobody takes me seriously. The thing is, I'm very afraid of getting pregnant, and it's my experience that condoms don't always work great, unfortunately. I'm at a loss. I really wouldn't want to have an abortion.

The normal course of things would be to try different birth control pills. However, I'm afraid that the same will happen again, which was horrid. I made the mistake of going to a different gynecologist than before, who doesn't know my history of treatment. He prescribed me the same substance to which I had extreme adverse reaction two times already. I ain't gonna take that in a life time again and hurt myself. I don't know what to do. It was a mistake to go to this doctor, he was just more available and within insurance. I don't have sex any more now due to other reasons, so I feel stupid nagging my usual doctor about it. Especially since I went to her in this weird panicked mental state a day or two after this pill and behaved like stupid. I feel ashamed of what I said. I wasn't myself. She offered me the mini pill. I didn't want it, because of the short time window and possible loss of sex drive and possibly cysts. I researched the topic and the mini pill might not completely get rid of estrogens in the body, so might not cause a loss of sex drive, modern mini pills have a larger time window and they don't cause cysts even in people with irregular cycles. Apparently, the mini pill hardly influences the cycle at all. But... I'm still afraid that the same as previously will happen.

But maybe I'm just a victim of advertising and a trend for birth control pills and they're not the only way. But I'm anxious regardless.

I don't know what my point is, I want to express my frustration about this subject.

Hi, I’d be surprised if one tablet would cause those symptoms. Would you consider talking to someone at a sexual health clinic? It depends where you live but if you could go to one of those they will be experts and could tell you all your options. For what it’s worth, I can’t take the pull as it gave me visual disturbances, so we have used condoms only since I had my children, no accidents.

There is no such thing where I live.

The doctor said I could get some implant, there are several kinds, but I'm scared of medical procedures and not being able to take it out in case any severe side effect show up.

    Thanks for sharing.

Yeah I think an implant does come with the risk of side effects that you can’t just stop. I don’t have any good answers. I hope you manage to get to the bottom of it, there must be some clinic but it depends where you live. I am lucky, most of UK has access to these things.

I mean, the way you do it here is just going to a gynecologist. Or any doctor can prescribe birth control, really, especially as continuation. It's easy. The trouble is... when things don't go as expected, like in my case.

Geez. I just made the mistake to go to a different doctor, who doesn't have my treatment history and hoped everything will be fine and of course it wasn't...

Thank you for sharing that other methods worked for you too.

It's good to know that spermicide can be used together with a condom too. I mean, it's obvious, but it's not mentioned, as with other barrier methods, so it's easy to think it's not an option.

My sister had to try two or three different kinds to find one that didn't give her side effects; as she is one of those people that always get the side effect with the lowest chance of getting it on any medication. The first couple anti depressants she was on gave her nose bleeds so bad she ruined a pillow or two.

So you aren't alone in getting side effects. In fact thinking of other family and friends, I would lean to it being weird if you don't get any. Just something you have to work with your doctor with.

I'm a bit late to this topic, but have you considered getting an IUD? It hurts like crazy getting put in, but after that, no problems. You can keep it in for 10 years. It also makes my periods very light, which is a bonus. I tried pills too, but as a diabetic, they made my blood sugar levels uncontrollable.

I figure you have hormonal IUD. Did you notice any mood changes or changes to the timing of periods because of it?

If it is good for 10 years then that is a copper IUD, which was one of the options in the article that I linked. The difficulty with the hormonal IUD is that if you have issues with the pill you will almost certainly have issues with other hormonal methods like hormonal IUD, vaginal ring, patches, implants etc

But the copper IUD makes periods more painful and profuse. Progestogens make periods lighter, on the other hand. This is why I assumed it's hormonal.

I have enough of these issues already, to be honest, I have minor issues with my own system again, but I'm curious.

It's the copper kind, no hormones. Period timing is a bit weird, but usually I can hardly call it a period since there's so little bleeding. My sister also had an IUD and she said her periods stopped completely. Lucky.

Wow. No hormones and lighter or stopped periods. Interesting.

So I went to my regular doctor to talk about it and had a reasonable conversation about it all, and I feel somewhat better. Apart from it, I needed a control visit anyway, like, once every half a year or so, you know. I got a different pill that should have a different side effect spectrum (if I will tolerate it at all).

What state do you live in? I just read some states allow for you to get a birth control prescription from a pharmacist and never see a doctor

Oh, then might want to Google how to get birth control in your area because I only read about us regulations, but found it here
