This is an edited version of a story I read. Once upon a time, there was a prince. All of his life the king and queen told him that he was born a princess so he must stay a princess and act like one. They always told him that princesses behaved like ladies, worse beautiful dresses, trained in proper manners and elegance, and were to always wait for a real and handsome prince to come save them if ever needed. Princes behaved like gentlemen, wore the finest suites, trained in swordsmanship and sailing, and were always ready to save a princess. This was the perfect formula for a “happily ever after,” or at least that’s what his parents always told him. What if they were wrong? Could his “happily ever after” look different? One day, this particular human found himself to be in a bit of a pickle. He somehow ended up in the den of a vicious, multi-headed, fire-breathing dragon. He was not about to wait for a prince to save him, partly because he didn't have time, and partly because he didn’t need a prince. He didn’t have his sword, shield, and definitely not the right clothes to fight. The dragon was closing in fast. Everything his parents had ever said to him reared their heads and spewed their awful fire in his face until he fell to the ground, burned and battered. He closed his eyes and wished with all of his heart that he had what he needed to fight his way through. Then, his fairy godfather, who had heard his desperate pleas, appeared in the nick of time with a shining suit of armor. He put on the armor and he kicked that dragon’s ugly, judgemental ass! In that moment, and for the rest of his life, he wasn’t a princess and he wasn’t a prince. He was a knight in shining armor: unidentifiable, strong, inimitable, and whole. He behaved with nobility, wore the most impenetrable armor, wielded his weapon with strength, trained his brain and his body, and never ever waited to be saved. He could slay dragons and go to afternoon tea with the queen in the same day. He could be a prince and even marry one. He was himself, and he lived happily ever after.
If only it were that easy to just make a wish and change. Maybe someday I can be the princess and that prince can come and rescue me.
