I got stitches yesterday because I had this freckle on my ear and the doctor wasn't 100% sure if it was melanoma or not so I had to get a biopsy. I think that's what it was. They had to give me an injection, to numb the area, then took off part of the freckle and stitched my ear up. They had to send part of it away for testing. I'd never gotten stitches before, I think I got three because I definitely felt more than one lol. It didn't hurt until like that night and today, it hurts more. I'm nervous because they want me to get them out tomorrow and that doesn't seem like enough time, I thought when he said Friday he meant Friday next week but he meant tomorrow. I feel like it's going to hurt to get them taken them out. Is it going to hurt?
Well, I'm not a doctor, so I can't say it's always a painless process, but I had to remove stitches a few times already and it never hurt, as far as I remember. It is a pretty simple process and, based on what you are describing, it doesn't seem like your case is complicated or anything like that. Don't worry about it.
I've had stitches both minor (cut on hand) and pretty major (large abdominal incision, which were actually staples rather than stitches.) No discomfort with removal of either.
No, it shouldn't. They pretty much just pull it out slowly like a thread and it comes out easily without hurting.
Thanks for the replies, they've definitely been reassuring. I didn't actually end up getting my stitches out today. I went back to the doctor and he looked at them…he said I couldn't get them out since the area isn't really healed yet. So now I'm going back Monday, hopefully I'll be getting them out then.
It makes sense, as the wound is still recent. But, considering what you and the doctor said, it seems to be a simple situation, so yeah, everything will probably be ok on Monday.
I've had them a few times and it was never painful, though the five I had in my lip was a little on the weird side.
Hey Spot. I have had stitches in toes, feet, fingers, even my thigh where they grafted skin for a finger. What I did was think about counting as fast as you can, before you know it everything will be over. Don't really hurt. In my experience as the wound heals the stitches start to become loose cause the skin pulls away from them so usually not much pain just a weird feeling. Dean
My one and only experience with stitches was getting three right on the bridge of my nose, after getting smashed in the face by the top of my horse's head. Great fun. Bled everywhere from a teeny, tiny cut. Getting them out was painless. Just an odd tugging sensation. It's a weird feeling but not painful. I did close my eyes for it though, so as not to have to see them coming out of my skin.
I've had stitches a couple of times. They never hurt when they took them out. It can feel a bit weird getting them out, but I wouldn't describe that feeling as pain.
I’ve had a few stitches in my thumb, and I can’t say it hurt to take them out, but from what I remember, it was more of a weird “tugging” sensation than anything.
Thanks for the input, I should be getting them out in an hour and a half if my appointment goes to plan this time lol.
