Great that your first visit to the bar went so well and that you had a good time.

The last time I went to the local gay bar was a few years ago for a New Year's Eve celebration. Though I'm not a bar person, it was still quite a bit of fun.

Good to hear! I'm not a big fan of bars and parties. Maybe it is because there aren't any LGBT bars in my city (only big parties full of drunk and uninteresting people ¬¬ ). I hope to find more interesting places when I move, in April/May, and I hope to have good experiences like that too.

Congrats on this! It's an awesome step in terms of connecting yourself with other gay folks. Even if you don't particularly like the bar/club scene, it is an experience worth having simply for the connection. Personally, I prefer less alcohol-driven gatherings, but I'm also lucky enough to live in an area where there are a bunch of different Meetup groups offering lots of options.

And... any time someone mentions gay bars, I can't resist this:

And just for grins, this one made me laugh out loud the first time I saw it

I like the gay bar scene quite a bit, although unfortunately we don't have any here...just one club that has a gay night once a week. The couple I've been to while traveling around the state though have been pretty fun. Everyone is so much more friendly there compared to normal bars/clubs. At a normal club you get ignored by nearly everyone unless you're doing something entertaining, but at gay bars so many random strangers come up to just talk and give you a hug for no reason, it's such a nice atmosphere.

It's awesome that you had a good time!

Glad you had a good time!

I still have good friends that I met literally my first time in a gay bar--and that was well over twenty-five years ago!

Congrats my friend! It must have felt empowering to go there and meet like-minded people. I've never been to a gay bar. So happy for you. Yesterday, after my coming out story to my son, he took me out for lunch. Near the restaurant he pointed out a local establishment, which he explained was a gay bar. I am not much of a drinker, but when next I visit my boy, perhaps I might drop by. My son also told me that there was a gay strip club in town too. It also hosts drag nights. I think I need a little more time to get up the nerve before I venture there! *laugh*

It's kind of funny. I always see people say when discussing gay bars that they aren't much of a drinker. In my experience a lot of people in a popular gay bar won't be big drinkers. I can still nurse two cocktails for four hours. For the first year I went to gay bars I ordered Coke most of the time. Still after all these years and hundreds (possibly thousands) of evenings in gay bars and clubs I can count on one hand the times I've had more than four drinks in an evening out--and we'd go out in big groups so we were often out for four to six hours at a time...

That would me be as well because I don’t drink. Also very allergic to smoke so it would have to be a smoke free one. Only been to one in my life and it was loud and smoky so I stayed on the roof deck.

You said it. My poor father hung out in bars. When I went to try to coax him home, the smokey atmosphere was terrible. After a while staying in the place, breathing that smoke in, one's mouth began to taste like an ashtray. Yuck!

Jake, Congrats again. My first real social event the other night went well, where I actually had the guts to walk up to the group and say hello, I did find a couple of gay bars when I was about your age. I was so nervous I shook and almost didn't walk through the door the first time. I just sat at the bar like a wide eyed virgin!
I'm really proud of you for having the courage to be yourself!

I am not into bars in general. I would go maybe with a friend.

I do like the idea of a place that is for us gathering together.

I do not drink often maybe once every 20 years.

I just hate the taste so much esp. Beer.

I love being around my friends, and I am part of a social group boys for brews. So I will be going to a bar not a gay bar a reg one with maybe 30 gay men. The group is also doing things with the gay Men.s group I am in so when I can I go with them.

Since I'm not really into loud, flamboyant people, I'm not sure I would like a gay bar. Bar people in general, regardless of orientation, tend to be loud and obnoxious and overly animated. Straight bars are already not really my cup of tea so I doubt there'd be much different about a gay bar for me.

Glad you had a good time though! Are you going back soon?
