Never understood the appeal of being in a room almost-squeezed in between others
as soon you are legal to buy beer, dealing with complete unpredictable
strangers where you don't know what types of drunk they are, drinking alcohol
until you trow up and have a blackout or at least a headache the next day.

Even if I liked drinking a lot, my job would soon level that off. When you work shifts and have to be totally sober (knowing that random screening takes place) it soon curtails any excess. If I was found to have even a trace of alcohol in my system at work I would be fired.

I don't drink because I don't like the taste and when I have had a drink I know I'm behaving weirdly but can't stop myself and the lack of control over my words and actions scares me. A couple of weeks ago was the Jazz weekend in county cork. There are jazz bands from around the world, visitors from around the world and every bar in the city ( is has a lot of bars there are thousands of college kids in the city) was packed. My sister came from England with her boyfriend ( he's a Harry Potter fan so I approve) and my brother came down from Dublin. The only problem was I was miserable. I can't stand for more than a few minutes because of a disability but even when we miraculously found seats I was still miserable. So I bought a rum and Fanta and gulped it because it was awful. Follow that but 2 vodkas and cokes all drank in less than 45 mins and I was well on my way to drunk but I was having a good time. I don't want to have to drink to have fun. I also find a good book fun and a much better use of money.

Rum and fanta sounds pretty revolting, I only have Rum with coke or just neat with ice.

The weird thing is, I don't really get drunk to the point I lose control. I can hold my liquor quite well, and I've got myself home safely plenty of times after drinking a lot, whereas my brother seems to get wasted after a few pints and needs to be looked after by friends.

I've also seen people get nasty after having a lot to drink, and they've ruined a good night out. So I don't want to be that guy. I still watch what I say and do even when I'm intoxicated.

No I don’t need alcohol to have a good time. Sometimes it does help me socialize a bit but no I don’t need it to have fun.

if you've ever read the outsiders by SE hinton, then you'll remember that one of the characters whose name I conveniently forget is said to get "drunk on plain living".

I don't even drink alcohol. The only times I have are communion wine at church and a sip a couple of times to try something.

At one time, sure. It helped with my social anxiety and gave me something to do with others. Got old pretty fast, though. If you're in your forties and partying every week like you're a teenager...

I understand that drinking is a pretty big thing in the UK. That, and gay clubs being a "hub" for night life probably are why you have trouble having a sober conversation.

Yeah, I don't like to be ageist, but when I see people in their 40s and older carrying on like teenagers who have only just discovered drinking, I kind of think "shouldn't you be over it by now?"
