Is there a connection between having a high voice and being gay?

I'm 17 in a few weeks and my voice is yet to break...
A bit worrying to say the least. It's very humiliating. However, I've noticed that quite a few gay men have a high pitched voice, or even just a slightly higher pitch than most straight men. It's quite easy to determine who is gay judging on the pitch of their voice.

Is there a correlation between them?

Not that I know of, there are many gay men who have deep voices.

I never went through the whole voice cracking thing, or if I did it was very short lived. Puberty was gentle on me.
You’re still going through the end stages of puberty so your voice may drop a little bit still.
I’ve always had a higher pitch voice than my younger brother, I used to think he was purposely making his voice deeper to sound more grown up but we’re in our mid 20s now and his voice is still deeper than mine.

Don’t let it be humiliating to you. I’ve met a lot of straight guys who have more feminine and higher pitch voices than my own.

I don't think so. Not all lesbians have lower pitched voices as well. My voice is lower but that has nothing to do with my sexuality.

I do know of some gay men who do have higher pitched voices, and some gay men who don't. I don't think there's any correlation between a person's voice pitch and their sexual orientation. I think it's just a stereotype that's put on gay men.

I get laughed at often for it. And I am near the end of puberty so I am concerned.

It has more to do with wide pitch range

Oh, I’m really sorry to hear that. The good thing is that for the most part once people grow up they don’t act like that anymore. So in the future it’s unlikely you will be laughed at.

I can't see any biological way for voice and sexuality to be linked - there are lots of straight guys with high voices too, although I admit it's weird that the majority of gay guys seem to have noticeably higher voices than average.

I try not to be too stereotypical about it but every time I hear a 'gay voice' I look around to find the person and most of the time they're clearly gay or at least don't seem like normal straight people do. This happened today actually. I was walking to class and heard 'heyyy I didn't see you earlier!' in a high pitched voice from a guy behind me and got the gay vibe, looked over just in time to see him grab another dude in a full embrace boyfriend-type hug.

Probably not, but there is supposedly a link between hearing and being gay.

I highly suggest the documentary Do I Sound Gay?. I watched it last year for a linguistics class I took and it was very interesting.

Want to switch voices? I have a really deep voice and I honestly hate it. I'd love a higher pitched voice...

no, i've met straight guys with higher voices before, so i think it's not too much of a big deal. I've been told that I have a deep voice and a lot of people are surprise when i say im gay.

I read into something that says the vocal cords can be damaged if I try and speak deeper.

Since that won't work, is there any way around this?

I do this as well. Always on the lookout and it is quite easy to determine that they are gay.

No correlation between vocal pitch and sexual orientation. Some of my best friends who are gay have very deep voices, and some of my straight friends have rather high voices.

Also, for what it's worth, adolescence technically extends to age 25, and there are plenty of people whose voices don't mature until in their early-mid 20s. So you have plenty of time yet. If you're really concerned, you could ask your doctor for a referral to an endocrinologist to have things checked to make sure you have appropriate hormonal development.

Thanks for that info. I had no idea that adolescence extends that long. I'll get in touch with a doctor.

My voice was very slow to change. My twin brother had a deep voice when he was 13 yet mine still had hardly changed at 17. Some people simply do have higher-pitched voices that never really change, but you should give it a little more time. I don't believe that there is any correlation between it and sexuality, however.

I think I have a VERY gay sounding voice, but a lot of people still assume that I'm straight. I wouldn't say I was high pitched, it's quite low, but my pronunciations and my choice of words sound pretty gay. I just don't talk like most straight guys. I do think there is a gay accent, but I wouldn't say there's a gay voice pitch.
