Hi, I have skimmed through the 'LGBT Books' sticky and found loads of suggestions but wondering if anybody could recommend any books with/about lesbian characters that are not fantasy/sci-fi? Preferably aimed at adults rather than YA but I know there's some good YA stuff out there so not averse to it entirely. I've read 'Oranges are not the only fruit'. Also keen to read lesbian-related non-fiction: coming out stories or other books about being female and gay in the modern world! Thanks everyone.
Check out the lesbrary: http://lesbrary.com/ ! They have very extensive lists of books featuring bi and lesbian women of all kinds. Their recommendations list provides a nice pocket-sized overview over books they deem worth reading, but you can also browse their reviews (they're sorted by genre, rating or type of representation) and the links in their sidebar provide you with even more lists of books. It's by far one of my favourite sources for finding wlw books because a lot of them are, well, not that great, so it's nice to have someone tell me which books are shitty representation and not worth my time!
Amazing, thanks for the link! That looks really useful. I know what you mean about a lot being 'not that great' which I why I went in search of recommendations in the first place
Check out books by Susan X Meager, Gerri Hill and Radclyffe. All for adults and all non fantasy/sy-fy. Radclyffes Provincetown and Justice series are really good. Gerri Hills most recent book involves two women in there 40s and Susan X Meagher has a series about two women in there 20s but has plenty of standalone books. Robin Alexander is a great author. I find her books hilarious but she does have some books with a mild ghost angle but the main plot of every story is the romance and The Last of The Loudens had the most ghost activity in it but actually made me laugh out loud.
The first that comes to mind is ‘the price of salt’ or better known as ‘Carol’ by Patricia Highsmith. It’s a real classic in lesbian literature. One that I loved a lot was ‘the miseducation of cameron post’ by Emily m. Danforth. It’s a coming of age story so maybe more young adult but I think all ages can enjoy this story
I would like to recommend "The Animators" by Kayla Rae Whitaker. Some have found it boring or too long, but I liked it.
Wow, thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Plenty to keep me busy! Ooh yes of course - I loved the film and meant to track down the book as soon as I discovered it was based on one but forgot at the time. Thanks.
Oh well great! There is no book for this but Below Her Mouth is an amazing movie. I watched it twice in like three days! If you like Erika Linder this movie will be your cup of tea, and if you don't know who she is you will by the end of the movie!
I had no idea who she was before I heard her mentioned on here and googled the name... It sounds like I will like the movie!! Thanks @Love4Ever
I should add, that the two main characters in this book are not a couple, but one of them IS indeed a lesbian. So it's not really a "lesbian book" per se, but still had a great examination of teamwork, family, friendship, and love. There still is bits of lesbian relationships sprinkled throughout the novel.
Sarah Waters also writes a lot of books with lesbian characters. She mainly writes historical fiction.
