Oral is the lowest risk thing you can do other than just handjobs - yes people use condoms for oral but a lot of guys don't like that since it decreases the feeling.

It depends which STI you are talking about

For HIV, the risk is null. Not something you have to worry about.

For syphilis and gonorrhea, those are your real concerns. Chances are that your first encounter would be fine, but the chance of catching something is very real with oral sex.

Good news is that there are things that you can do to manage the risks

1. Get tested! Have you gotten tested before? If not, then go and get one done. You want to do it now so you are familiar with the process and you can truly know if you are STI free or not. Do not sleep with other people before you get tested.

2. Don't brush your teeth right before you meet up with someone. If you care about your breath, use mouth wash.

3. Yes, you can always use a condom. A lot of guys don't like it, but if you want to use one they sell flavored condoms for this reason alone. Go buy some or get some from your local planned parenthood or LGBT center.

4. It doesn't bring the risk up too much, but if you avoid cum that will also help reduce risk

5. GET TESTED at least once a year.

If it helps, I used to be kind of a man whore for years and never got a STI, even though I used a condom for oral exactly once (I consistently used them for anal.) The problem isn't sensation for the "top", it's more about it being disgusting to suck on a condom (the flavored ones are gross, too.)

Regarding syphilis and gonorrhea, they're nasty, but a couple shots of penicillin G will get rid of those if you ever got them.

 

Its actually a bit easier here in the states.

I got it once (keep in mind I have been with more than 100 guys so the odds are pretty good). Got tested, got diagnosed, was prescribed one single pill, all symptoms stopped after one day and had to stop having sex for 2 weeks. Got tested again and I was done.

Its definitely something to still watch over, but not something to be super scared of.

You can do some oral that doesn't involve the penis in your mouth and contact with semen. Depending on the guy, this can be just fine. I have a casual friend that we just do very light stuff that includes a little bit of nibbling and licking in sensitive areas along with some strategic hand work. It can be as stimulating as anything and some safer. There is still a chance for some STI's but less.
