So I purchased two of those Kinder Joy or Kinder Surprise things from a Wawa today and they're pretty cute??? And tasty, if you like hazelnut chocolate and sweet cream. They even come with a cute little toy, albeit cheap plastic and paper, but what do you expect? I always wanted to try them and perceptions be damned because I am a working adult who pays taxes and bills.

I can't believe those are illegal in America. Would've thought gun laws would be more of a concern...
I gotta agree though, they're delicious. Not sure if America has these or not but in Canada we have a bar version of Kinder eggs, like a regular chocolate bar.

Illegal in America...? Lol I live in America and saw them being sold on a shelf in Wawa oops! I committed a crime! LOL

Yeah...America is a mess and needs to get it's priorities straight. Like, it needed to do that yesterday.

I keep getting confused when you say Wawa, I had to Google it to figure out it's a convenience store lol (Wawa is also a very small town near where I live).

Ok, upon doing a little research, it turns out that the candy called "Kinder Surprise" is illegal in America, but the candy called "Kinder Joy" is legal. The candies are quite similar.

    That's odd. America is weird.

I used to live in Russia as a child and I absolutely loved kinder eggs with the toys in them. Some of the best memories as a little kid... I wish we had them in America - I'd buy so many in a heartbeat.

I mean, we have Kinder Joys in America. They're not exactly the same thing as Kinder Surprise but they might bring back the nostalgia? One half of the egg is candy and the other half is the toy.

From back in the day, I still remember wonderballs. They were these hollow balls of chocolate with a little candy or sticker inside them. I loved those things; I remember I got one with a sticker of young Simba from the Lion King. My aunt used to treat me to them.

Yeah, the reason why is that there's a law in America that forbids toys being completely encapsulated by food, especially when it's marketed to kids, most likely to prevent choking hazards.

Put a gun in the chocolate and that law will be repelled

I love them too! They're fortunately not illegal (neither of them are illegal here). I've actually kept two of the toys, because sometimes you luck out and get a decent toy. Other times, not so lucky and you end up getting something silly. I usually buy two - one for girls and one for boys, because sometimes the toys you get for boys is better than the ones for girls. I don't care what people think when I buy them because there's a little girl (or boy) inside all of us, and the candy is awesome! Great, now I'm craving them, lol...

Does anyone know why Kinder Surprise is illegal? Curious what the lawmakers had to say.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act prohibits confectionery products which contain a “non-nutritive object”, unless the non-nutritive object has functional value. Essentially, the Act bans "the sale of any candy that has embedded in it a toy or trinket".

So...does Kinder Joy have the toy or trinket on the side?

Yeah, it's not encased in the candy, which ostensibly makes it less of a choking hazard and keeps it from violating the law.

I think kinder eggs are banned in Australia so we can't have any of them

Is that the Kinder Surprise eggs that are banned? It seems logical since it's a choking hazard in food that's marketing towards children. The Kinder Eggs are safer as the toy and sweet treat are separate.

Actually I saw them in Australia, I thought they were banned but they weren't actually banned.

I love kinder eggs and I love the kinder bars too. I hardly ever got them as a kid they were too expensive and I have younger siblings who at the time would have swallowed small parts. Ive bought them myself but it's not enough for even a snack one egg is one mouthful for an adult.
