So, today while I was at the hospital waiting for my wife to get out of surgery; nothing serious and she is fine; I realized I haven't used an elevator in like eight or ten years. Now the thing that struck me as funny is that kind of thing really shows just how different, different parts of the USA or even other parts of the world are. I lived in Wyoming where only one building in the entire state had escalators, and the tallest buildings were the dorms at the University. And when I travel I usually stay at families' house. A point my wife laughed about when I pointed it out to her, we have an odd sense of humor.
There's only one building in all of Wyoming with escalators? I think there's like 3 within a mile of me right now. One of my friends just transferred to University of Wyoming and it sounds like he's in for quite a culture shock coming from Florida.
That'd be quite the culture shock - I use an elevator multiple times a week. For some reason, escalators aren't nearly as common here. I only remember taking one at Sears (which is now closed) and the airport lol
I haven't used an escalator in I don't know how long. By choice though total claustrophobia trigger unless it's see-through and maybe only one floor then I'll sometimes take the chance like if I can't otherwise. But that's so weird that there is hardly any elevators there, they even have a couple in our local mall that's not even that big...
Outside of the historical center, there are dozens of buildings with an elevator in Prague. I live in a block of flats and there's an elevator, but I try to not use it too much, since using stairs is more healthy. But I admit it's comfortable. Speaking about elevators, something that's really interesting is an old type of elevator called paternoster. It's basically a chain of compartments going up and down in a loop, so you may enter and exit as you wish. Many of them were shut down due to safety reasons, but some of them are still active. They are usually considered just an attraction/sight these times. I've recently been to one after a long time.. I used to love them as a child.
The only place I can think of that has an escalator is the mall. Elevators are in all campus buildings. I usually take the stairs unless I have to go up more than two floors lol
I don’t always get to use an elevator but when I do I always jump when it starts going down. Last time I used one I had my mtn bike with me and it was surprisingly difficult to get in and out. I like the flat (horizontal escalators, conveyor belts?) at the airport.
Culture shock and environmental shock. Winter in Wyoming is as bad or worse than winter in Alaska. I remember many times Wyoming was colder than places in Alaska.
All of the buildings I go to are no higher than two stories high and I'm not patient enough for an elevator.
