I recently came to terms with being non binary and queer. I think that I want to cut my hair. I have been fantasizing about it for a while and I've looked up a ton of different haircuts I could get. My hair is currently pretty long. I am pretty terrified that I won't look good with short hair or whatever. My hair is currently a big part of my identity just because it is the only thing I put effort into when getting ready... I don't know how to tell if I am ready to cut my hair or not? Is this something I should just go for or will a time come when I feel confident in how it will turn out? Thanks! I really wanna know if this hesitation is normal so please help!

i'm not sure if you'll ever feel ready. i know i wasn't. i spent ages (think years) wanting to cut my hair and i never ended up making the appointment or going through with it because i was so scared of not liking it, or it looking bad on me, or whatever. then one day i told myself: screw this. hair grows back. if i don't like it, i can just let it grow again, y'know? i did make sure to go to a hairdresser with a somewhat good reputation (my usual one specialised in seniors and while she can give you the perfect bleached perm, anything else is... eh. she was cheap and it worked fine to cut the split ends off longer hair, but i didn't trust her to give me a great shorter cut), which was more expensive so i felt like if i was spending that money, i HAD to go through with it or else it would be a big waste of money. Hairdressers are notoriously expensive in scandinavia so this was a big commitment i was making haha. anyway, i went, got it cut - and i hated it. i looked in the mirror and asked myself, what did i do?! this is hideous! but drastically different haircuts can take a little while to grow on you and within a couple of days, i loved it. didn't regret it for a bit. since then i've never let it grow much longer anymore and when i see old pictures i always wonder why i was afraid to let go of that longer hair. i've also tried much shorter cuts, didn't like it because my hair is very thin and it made me look like i had bald spots, so i grew it back out. you'd be surprised how quickly hair grows -- you don't notice it when it's very long but when it's short it'll feel like you go from a buzz cut to shoulder length hair in WEEKS (figuratively speaking, of course  ).

i think if you're not used to changing your hair drastically a lot, hair starts feeling like an unchangeable part. kind of like your nose or ears: it's there, in theory you could change it, but doing so is a MAJOR step. but it isn't: if you get surgery on your nose or ears, it won't grow back. it'll stay that way. the beauty of hair is that it does, and any mistake can be undone, if you just give it some time. The hesitation you're feeling is definitely normal, i'd say  i can't tell you when is the right time to cut it for you, but i do think there'll just be a point at which you still hesitate but will force yourself to do it regardless. you'll probably never feel confident in whether it will turn out good, because it is hard to imagine yourself with short hair if you've never had it... you can of course try out those websites and apps where you upload your photo and then add a different hairstyle, but i've found these to be useless (the haircuts are often taken from celebs who have 500x the budget to make it look good, the hair textures of the hairstyles is different from yours so your actual cut will always turn out differently than the site/app can show you, and... for me it only made me more scared)

by the way... with a lot of short hairstyles, you can STILL put in lots of effort into the way it looks. you might not be able to make a long braid or, idk, funny constructions like a bow-shaped hairdo (you can tell i've had short hair for quite a while because i don't know what people do with long hair haha) but you can still style it in all sorts of ways! unless you go for a buzz cut it doesn't have to be more limiting than long hair in that aspect at all!

What i did is photoshop. Yeah, not a photoshop expert but i did it on my phone. First i picked a hairstyle that i like and downloaded a pic of a girl with that hairstyle. Erased her face and just put my face instead. I liked it and i think i'm going to cut my hair like that soon.

My hair used to be down to my bum and I cut 21 inches off it four years ago overmorrow and it was one of the best decisions I made. I cut my hair with a number 4 razor guard every three months and my hair is so much thicker and darker than it used to be. It grows very quickly and as the previous comment said - hair grows back. Since I cut it to my shoulders I have done so many things with my hair that I was afraid to do before because now I know that if anything goes wrong, well it’ll grow back. My hair grew to my chin in a year, I shaved one side of my head and dyed the other side blue. If you’re scared about cutting it then maybe only cut some off? Go gradually shorter rather than one big chop.

I cut my hair gradually. When I was younger I had it shoulder length but eventually worked it up through successive haircuts to really short. Then decided super short wasn't for me, so I've let it grow back to a medium short length. The way I see it, hair is a great opportunity to experiment with different looks and styles because it always grows back. Of course it's always going to be a bit scary to try something new - but how can you ever know if you don't try?

I had mine cut to "a pixie," as my mother quotes, yet I wanted it to resemble a male feature of myself.
I really did like it in the moment. I felt so cool with my short hair, people saying, "sir," here and there.
It made me look great in beanies.

I don't think it looked the best on me after a bit, ahaha. For a while I liked the swooping I would do with my head to get it away
from my eyes, but when I looked in the mirror, it just didn't look the best with my long face.

I've been letting it grow out and today it looks pretty okay. I like it.
I recently got it trimmed and my bangs are almost properly aligned with the back of my hair.

It looks like this, but not with that many fly-aways.
