Music is my therapy. I connect to myself and the world through music and I’ve found myself sad that I haven’t been relating to hetero-centric music. This week I’ve finally found some stuff I like! What other recommendations do you have? I’d love to find more good music by older women who have more life experience. I’m not that into Indigo Girls and KD Lang. (Sorry, fans!) I’m loving Follow Your Arrow by Kasey Musgraves. It’s not about sexuality exactly, but about not worrying what other people think. I’ve also been listening to Marika Hackman’s new album. It’s more ironic/angry-type music, but some of the songs are very sexy. I like Boyfriend, about a woman who’s sleeping with a woman who’s in a relationship with a clueless man who doesn’t mind because “it takes a man to make a woman scream.” This line is followed by some ooh-wees and screaming. In a weird way I find it empowering. Jasmine Thompson has some sweet acoustic covers. Check out her version of Hey There Delilah. The songs make me sad because I long to have someone to share them with and I don’t, but sometimes I like to indulge in sadness. And I Follow Rivers by Lykke Li is good too. It was in Blue is the Warmest Color (movie). Marika Hackman also has a version of it.
Great song. My partner introduced me that one. Have you posted/read in the Entertainment and Media section? Might get some ideas there.
I haven't ventured outside of this later in life forum much. I'm having some trouble relating to younger people (and a little jealousy that I can't go back 20 years and be more self-aware!) right now and feel a little safer in this space, but that's probably a good idea! Thanks!
Don't beat yourself up. When I was at school nobody was out. Things change. Going back in time probably wouldn't help you. You'd need to be a teenager today. It's interesting to see things from their perspective. They'll notice things you and I wouldn't have thought of!
I've been really into Brandi Carlisle lately. Haha her song The Story feels like it's my anthem. Thank you @Mabel for the introduction to her music! It's a bit Indigo Girls-esque though, so maybe not for you. I agree @SoulSearch about feeling more at home in this forum. Just more relatable peeps I guess. I'm definitely going to check out some of your recommendations!
I like Hayley too, but my intro to her music was a video of "Girls Like Girls" and I didn't relate to the images of very young girls kind of playing around the oblivious boyfriend. I shouldn't watch videos. They tend to ruin songs for me. Ha ha. I think my favorite so far is "Palace."
HUUUGGE Hayley Kiyoko fan here!! Just discovered her music and love it so much! Also, here are a few songs you could maybe listen to: "Girl" - The Internet "Kiss my Girlfriend" Etta Bond "Only a Girl" - Gia
How about St. Vincent? Annie Clark is an amazing songwriter and one of the best guitar players in the business. Also, Amanda Palmer.
!!!Jimmy Somerville!!! Who else??? Is there anyone even close??? Anything by Jimmy Somerville - be it him in Bronski Beat, him in The Communards, or by him solo. Not all Bronski Beat and The Communards stuff had him in it.
i read a bit about her, i believe her parents are in the industry and she’s turned down labels since age 11! she did the full on music, instrumentals and lyrics/singing for 1950 all on her own and the story behind it was really touching. i believe she will release more soon and just signed with an independent- ish label while attending art school in LA i look forward to see what else she releases and check apple music for her stuff often, so i’ll try to remember to post here when i see it! same love by macklemore is a good song...
When I was a young Christian, I was really into Jennifer Knapp— soulful, acoustic, angry music. Also, hot. About eight years ago, she came out as gay. Her music bears that hurt and pain from the Christian community, plus the journey toward authenticity a lot of us have to go through. Plus she’s hot. And St. Vincent, Sleater Kinney, Melissa Etheridge, Tegan and Sara, Ani DiFranco, and Indigo Girls.
Oooh music, did you say music... I love music as it helps me express and feel emotion. Very much a lyric listener. Female artists comprise 90% of my music collection. Corday - The Longest Kiss Take one guess who my all time favorite artist is... Scarlets Walk is one of my all time favs.
Metro Station, "She Likes Girls." Awesome song and so catchy! I also love Hayley Kiyoko's "Girls Like Girls".
While these songs are not by lesbian/bi artists they have powerful messages. Another Girl’s Paradise - Tori Amos Me - Paula Cole Chasing the Sun - Sara Bareilles Not sure about Missy Higgins. Her song Unashamed Desire is well... just take a listen. Below is some of my favorite Brandi Carlile songs. Beginning to feel the years Again Today / Hiding My Heart (2 songs 8+ min) Before it Breaks In the Morrow
I like Jimmy Sommerville and can relate in some way. So does my girlfriend. I have also discovered a love of Joan Armatrading and subsequently learnt to my surprise that she is gay (I believe she is or has been married to a woman). I listen to the Gold compilation of her songs a lot - there are many great songs on it....try starting with Dryland...such a beautiful, romantic song....and yet I had never heard of it or ever heard it on the radio. Also, try Lady Gaga "Born this Way" and Sarah Bareilles "Brave".
