I agree it's really dumb people do stuff like that, but to be honest I don't see all that much of an issue with this particular case. The owner didn't seem to be trying to harass them, she even arranged for someone else to make the cake for them instead, as it says here:

"Still, the owner, Cathy Miller, told them that “because she does not condone same-sex marriage,” according to the opinion, she would send their order to another bakery."

That seems to genuinely be a case of her trying to both obey her beliefs and also help that couple at the same time by getting them another baker instead of ditching them completely.

Will she also refuse service to adulterers who want to get married, those who have been married before, or who have had children out of wedlock? Someone needs to remind her that the United States is not a theocracy. If she feels so strongly about her beliefs she should live in a convent.

    Exactly!
Also, I think that all bakeries that try to refuse gay people should be legally forced to bake this cake:

Also, I'm so tempted to make my own bakery, and then when a straight Christian couple comes in be like "umm. I'm sorry, but heterosexual relationships are against my religion. Can't bake you a cake, oops!"

It was like that case a few years back where the lady refused a cake for a gay couple due to her "belief in the sanctity of marriage". Keep in mind this lady was divorced about 4 or 5 times, so I guess she really doesn't know the true meaning of sanctity of marriage.

The problem as I see it though, is that it is a wedge case. And by tying it to the concept of "compelled speech", would exempt more than just her. While the ruling seems somewhat limited, it still applies to anything the court will later deem creative expression. So if the ruling stands (so far this is the first to go in favor of the business owner), then we get to find out just how far that goes. Not to mention further exceptions are bound to be sought in court, pointing to this ruling and their own religious objection.

As the Washington State Supreme Court commented about a similar case around a floral arrangement being "compelled speech":

EDIT: Honestly, it's one thing to shrug off one person who read too much into their holy book, but I'm more concerned about the more subtle and insidious damage this can do to the fabric of laws and amendments that govern equal protection under the law, equal housing access, and public accommodations. Especially when that damage is explicitly being done with the LGBT community as the target. But with the way things are going, it won't just be one community that suffers under this.

That's stupid for denying a gay person service. That's flushing money down the drain.

I wish someone would ask Mr. Phillips how he would feel if someone refused to bake him a cake because he's a Christian. I bet he would feel that would be discrimination and refusing a cake to an LGBTQ couple is no different.

I can't stand how they distort providing a service into a case about compelled speech and religious liberty. I find it very dishonest. Somehow in their minds they must think the end justifies the means, but all I see is hypocrisy. They have one goal in mind (which they won't admit) and go through all sorts of contortions rather than accept that they aren't endorsing the marriage and their personal belief isn't changed by making a cake. If such exceptions weren't carved out for cases regarding race then the same should apply for these cases. I see a never ending string of such cases and it's dishonest and vengeful.

People forget that religion was also used to defend people having slaves and their racist views. "I'm not racist, just following the bible here"

I really hope this case doesn't open a can of worms.

I personally think refusing to bake a cake for a gay couple is to show how the baker hates and judges people. The baker should stand on the street and say, "I'm a hater and judger".

The baker should go on to say, I use my religion to try and control you. If this is the road the baker wants to go down then so be it.

Well said! It is a huge legal issue, especially since the Trump Administration is supporting this and arguing against anti-discrimination laws. This is why something like who makes your wedding cake (which can seem like a minor thing) is such a big deal, politically. Protection from many types of discrimination - also those that are much bigger than refusing to bake a wedding cake - is disappearing in the U.S. with Trump as president.

Anyone who denies making someone a gay cake is discriminating against them and should have there business shut down and should be thrown in jail like Kim Davis.

I mean really you're deny me service? Why? Bc I'm a silly ole gay? I don't think so! That's just plain mean. If you can't accept me then you shouldn't be claiming religious reasons as the source bc if there is a god he loves everyone.

You know the pope said it's better to be a good atheist then a bad Christian. He is so right. You know I think we really need to put our faith in acceptance. It's good to be gay. We need to encourage that to younger lonely youths to make them feel more loved and open up close minded people's brains.
