I've just joined Empty Closets, and am happy to introduce myself. I'm a sixtyish American who became a naturalised Australian long ago, married to my Japanese husband living in Munich. How did we end up in Munich? We met when I was posted to Tokyo from Melbourne. A further posting to New York in the mid 90s complicated matters. As an American citizen with a foreign-born spouse, we were caught up in the US Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA. Lest we wanted to continue our relationship long distance, we needed to find a place to live together on the strength of our relationship. Germany's civil union laws allowed us to do so, and we've been living here ever since. I came out relatively late in life; I was in my mid 30s. Coming out is not always easy, especially if you have a difficult family history. I hope to contribute to the forum where I can, and take inspiration from the stories of others. Looking forward to it. Cheers, Marty
Your story is inspiring for young LGBT community like me. Finally you're happily married and living your dream.
Thanks, Dannyway! One seldom thinks of one's own story as inspiring. But if you find it so, I'm glad I shared it. Take care of yourself in Malaysia. It can't be easy for you.
Hey and welcome Interesting story. By the way, Munich is a beautiful city, I've been there a few times.
You're in Prague. We're practically neighbours! Co-incidentally, we'll spend the week in Karlovy Vary (and perhaps Marienbad) in the first week of January.
Hello Marty, and welcome to the community! Wonderful that you have decided to join, share your experiences, and supporting/helping others. Your story sounds quite interesting! Thanks for sharing. Munich is a beautiful city - been there only once or twice, but hopefully, I'll be able to go back one day.
