Today we in Australia celebrate the announcement at 10am EST, that 61.6% VOTED "YES" for Marriage Equality, and that the law be changed to allow same sex marriage in the Marriage Act. May we all join in loving harmony and happiness. Yipppeeee ☺
YESSS!!!! So exciting! I saw some reaction videos earlier and was crying my eyes out. Congratulations!
I honesty had prepared myself for the worst. It took some time for me to process. Then my boss said congratulations and hugged me and i cried like a baby.
YESSS!!!!! I WAS SO EXCITED I broke down in tears and couldn't stop! I was sooo happy! It was a beautiful feeling and I am so excited for all those already out, those waiting to get married and anyone needing that validation. AUSTRALIA VOTES YES!!
It must hurt when same-sex marriage opponents proclaimed: "Given the starting point, just to get 40 per cent [my bold] would be a moral victory for marriage," [former conservative Prime Minister Tony] Abbott said." ...with a NO vote at 38.4%... Congratulations to Australia for finally joining the 21st Century! Let us hope that there are no shenanigans with this "non-binding" vote/plebiscite. It should never have happened in the first place; if the country's elected members of parliament actually had the guts to stand and vote for something that everyone knew is what the majority of the Australian people have always wanted. What was created with this expensive exercise is dodging responsibility (or democracy when convenient) was an acrimonious and vicious debate leading up to the vote whose legacy could very well be lasting division and disharmony in a very decent and civilized country.
It's been legal here in Canada for years now. We are very lucky to have come along that far by making the right choice to allow everyone to love who they want to love. Even our Prime Minister marches in the Pride Parades.
Greatwhale the debate has already begun. Former P.M John Howard sealed it for us with the marriage act ammendment with the definition as a union 'between a man and a woman' and this can be removed easily, but i am reading already that some politicians want this left in and to have 'or two people' added. It is as though even if it passes there is a compulsion to segregate.
Now i made myself sad. I will worry about this next week but for today it is time to get back to celebrating!
