Does anyone find that to label oneself a "centrist" is to resign to fence-sitting, non-commitalism, and a mild unhelpful approach to real problems?

I am saying this as someone who wants to label himself a centrist, but finds it to be a problematic label on occasion.

You could try "independent" or "pragmatist"...

I think "left" and "right" can have different nuances from one country to the next. These really need to be at least slightly considered when talking to people online as online generally means international (unless this thread was only meant for U.S. citizens.) I generally don't bother talking about politics with people online. I think it's kind of a waste of time.

I don't know and don't care. I'm sick and tired of politics. I'm with whoever likes me and loves me.

  11. I’m a left leaning moderate. I honestly don’t like how both the left and right have been lately, and how they seem to be even more at war with each other than usual.

Don't know if you're talking to me but I'd say the UK is generally a good place to live. What's it like to live in Bruce Springsteen land?

Don't know if you're talking to me, but England I generally speaking quite bad in my opinion. Most of it looks the same, the weather's bad, no 2nd amendment or equivalent, the music sucks, the food sucks, the country is run by useless twats, etc.

I would rather live in America. Tenessee to be specific

Yes we have pride parades and skittles.

Yeah, the UK's weather isn't great but I like that nothing extreme happens. On the whole, we don't have many heatwaves or tornadoes or hurricanes or earthquakes. The weather is disappointing but it's safe.
The second amendment is the gun one isn't it? Thank God we don't have it, I don't want to be shot thank you very much.
I think the British music scene has always been a cut above America's. We had the Beatles, the Who, the Rolling Stones, the Animals: all these influential bands. A quick listen to BBC Radio 6 music and you'll know that Britian has a thriving music scene.
English food does suck, but does that matter? We get food from all over the world thanks to our former empire/Commonwealth and immigrant communities, and nobody's forcing you to eat soggy fish and chips.
I think that America has a slightly worse case of the useless twat leaders than the UK does.
Overall, there are some things I hate about the UK but I'm happy to be growing up British. I wouldn't want to live in any other country.

Maybe Nashville but it might be a little on the crowded side for me, I'm used to living in rural areas, so near to Nashville but not necessarily in Nashville. And tenessee because Nashville is the country music capital of the world and I listen to and play country, and I'm screwed if I want to make a career of it in England.

We had a hurricane in Ireland the other week, I have an interest in firearms, as stated earlier I listen to and play country so I'm pretty much fucked if I stay in England, sure, the food can be alright, love curry, and I like trump and think mays a pussy. That covers everything right?

Independent can only really refer to loyalty to a party. It doesn't mean much otherwise and pragmatism still has to be guided by some basic principles - it's simply a flexible approach to getting what you want.

It's quite evident to me that centrism isn't cowardly at all. Centrism can involve a lot of really passionately held principles - to free markets and social safety nets, to proportionality in political institutions and supporting public advocacy restrained by indirect forms of democracy and a technocratic rule of law. It's hard to defend principles behind the status quo and to sound passionate - but that doesn't mean that it's an act of cowardice.

Insofar as your politics involves any substantive commitment to something, it is not fence-sitting.

I completely agree, unfortunately a lot of people tend to associate "centrist" with being "lukewarm" because the way it sounds implies the person is between two opposing ideologies or on the middle of a spectrum. I personally don't find the "spectrum" useful because a person could have principles which lie all over the spectrum instead of all neatly tied together on one area of it. I think the left-right paradigm has more to do with convention than creating an optimal society.

Having said that there are some people who hold such extreme views that they will never be happy unless society goes in the unlikely direction they want it to go in like "removing every black person from [insert country.]"
