To the best of my knowledge; I've never tried out of date food

However... surely some food is fine beyond the so-called expiry dates!

Depends on the food item. There is obviously a risk if you aren't good at telling if the food is still safe to eat, as you might accidentally consume harmful bacteria or mold.

Some dairy products (such as cheese, sour cream, etc) can last a little while past the expiration date, but even then I'm iffy about that. Other heavily processed foods can be safe past that date.

    Couldn't have said it better.

Yes I've eaten many an expired food item in my time. Just got to eat it soon and use your nose. If it stinks or has a degraded texture don't eat. If it is highly processed (e.g. packaged, canned) it's probably fine.

It depends on the food item. I have found that i can eat bread for up to a week past its date just fine. I do that regularly - eat bread past its date. I would be open to eating pastries past their date, as well, but i don't regularly buy them to begin with let alone let them expire. I think stuff like bread keeps better than meat or dairy. I have eaten very, very expired BBQ sauce before (opened it w/o checking the date) and it was fine. So i guess processing has a lot to do with it.

It depends on what the food is, and how expired it is. I have ate or drank some stuff in the past that was a few days past it's expiration and I was fine. Other stuff not so much.

I usually wouldn't eat it if it is 3 or 4 days past expiration. Hell, I've even seen stuff start to mold a few weeks before expiration. I think it just depends on the food.

Only very specific foods like bread for example but for the most part, I'm too paranoid.

If we're including best before dates than yes. I mean if it's just a best before date then it just doesn't taste as good or it might be a little stale. Expiry dates I'm okay with if it's only been a few days. If it's been any longer you can usually just smell it to see if it's gone bad. But I mean I've had Nutella way past its best before date - I mean the water separates to the top but you just have to stir it.

There are two kinds of expiry dates.

Best Before dates - These mean that you can eat it after the date specified, but it won't be as good.

Use By dates - These mean that once the expiration has passed, you should throw it away.

    That said....

Yes, I have. There was a time when I was so dirt poor I couldn't afford food, and if it was expired wasn't an issue for me unless it had mold on it (and sometimes in the case of bread, not even then).

These days, I try to avoid it. I will eat food past it's "best before" date, but not the "use by" date if it has one. Recently, I did accidentally eat cottage cheese 2 days past its Used By date.... it didn't taste funny, but I don't recommend it, as it made me violently ill.

    If it's very processed, yea.
(vitamin C powders, dried seaweed, applesauce, peanut butter,, crackers, those McDonald's apple pies, etc)

Not dairy tho. I've had refrigerated milk expire BEFORE it's expiration date. tf

If it's only a couple weeks old I'll probably still use it. Especially for milk I'll use it until I find chunks in it.

I will eat something if it is one day out of date. Most food is dated early just to be safe. I reckon you have a couple of days leeway.

I can't vote because it depends (like most people have said). There's "best by" and "sell by" dates that, to me, are recommendations. Literally this means after a certain date it's either not the "best," but still okay to eat, or it's illegal to "sell." Some things have expiration dates 1-2 years in the future. Often it seems a little arbitrary. What's an extra day going to hurt?

I always buy whole grain bread, and the expiration date is usually a few days later, but sometimes I eat it a month past the expiration. I keep it refrigerated. I assume this date is for sitting on the counter. Things seem to last forever in the fridge.

Milk is the most iffy one. I may drink it a day or two after the expiration date, but only if it smells okay. But I prefer to use it before then.... I have a weird habit it smelling milk every time I use it. Occasionally it goes rancid earlier than the date says.

To add to that, I have salt that will supposedly expire in 2019. Salt can't really go bad if stored properly...

Yeah, for those I know are safe. The expired datum is required by law even if food
like unopened liquid like water and dry sealed food like pastry can last double the datum.

Btw. have you checked out you settings about you profile wall?
If ya have allowed everyone/every member to write on it
and if it still don't work, ask the staff about the issue. =D

Depends how far past the printed date and what specifically it is. Some things are fine beyond the so-called expiration date and other hold up decently for a few days after. The things that are obviously bad by the expiration date I will not eat or drink.

Milk, oil, and nut products are very tricky. They are spoil very easily so I'm very careful about them.

Things like salt, cinnamon, and cocoa powder don't go bad if kept well. We're talking decade old and still perfectly fresh. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't tasted it myself.

Like most people have already said, I eat expired food depending on what the food is and/or how expired it is exactly.

Exactly, but even then, I'm still really iffy about that kinda thing.
