This might sound stupid, but does anyone have any nightmare remedies? Or help shaking it off after you wake up? It usually stays with me for a while after I wake up, and if I wake up needing more sleep, there are times I fall right back into it that specific nightmare.

I can relate to your situation because from time to time, I too have nightmares. Really bad ones that I find myself once I am awakening...screaming or talking out loud. Sometimes, screaming for help. Yet, once I am awake, it takes a while for me to calm down or recover from then. So, you have company....

I as well have really bad nightmares, but I sleepwalk while having them. One night I had a nightmare where I went out onto the road and was hit by a semi...when I woke up I had mud on my feet. It scares me and most of the time I just stay up. This may sound stupid, but I used to have a superstitious thing where if i put my shoes on the end of my bed, one facing towards me and one facing away from me I wouldn't have nightmares, and I still do it today.

I know, those are the worst. I hate not having any real way of dealing with it, especially if it's because of health issues. And like I said, I have to force myself to stay awake because I usually go back into that dream if it's within 10 minutes or so.

That sounds really scary, I'm glad I don't sleepwalk. Have you been to doctors or had sleep tests done to try to figure that out? Or tried ways of keeping yourself safe at night?

And one time, for a few weeks (unfortunately not hyperbole), I had nightmares all night long, every night. After about 2 weeks of that, I believe I started developing a phobia of sleep, I literally freaked out a couple times when I started to feel tired.

That went away though, but I just wish there would be a more definitive way of dealing with that.

I find the best remedy for me is to turn on my bedside light and eventually I fall asleep again. Something about the light makes me feel safer than being in the dark after a nightmare, and I usually wake up sometime later and turn off the light. Maybe not good for your electricity bill, but it sure helps me!

I used to get nightmares every night for years. A few things that I did to help was leave a light on, turn some sound, tv, music, white noise etc. Also meditating for awhile before bed helped a lot. Try guided meditation if you have never done it before. Also a good cup of any relaxing hot tea is nice.

I know someone who draws whatever it was and then finds a way to make it funny. Like if they're dreaming about a scary man they give him a sparkly feather boa and draw him stepping on legos.

That sounds like a good idea, I can already think of some things from the nightmare last night. I don't really draw, but I'll see how I can incorporate that idea into writing.
    Thank you!

Perhaps you could visualize the changes you would make mentally rather then through drawing. I don't know if you are familiar with the fantasy book and movie series Harry Potter. The third installment, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban featured a magical creature called a boggart. A being that in the story turns into whatever the person facing it fears the most at the time. The characters would have to visualize how they would make the feared being funny and use a spell to force it into that shape. The resulting laughter would confuse it and drive it away.

Some examples from the film included a giant spider being given roller skates for all of it's legs and a large serpent being changed into the form of a jack-in-the-box to match it's movements back and forth when it appeared.

A little out of left field for an answer, but it is a thought.

When I have a nightmare I put on a kids show on Netflix on my iPad and try and fall back asleep. It's to get a nightmare if you fall asleep listening to Pokemon.

Thanks! I think I'll do that. I was about to get these types of computer glasses that block out the light that's not good for you at night, then I'll be doing more things like that.

Your welcome DirectionNorth.^-^ I figured that using Harry Potter could help to further the idea along as an example.

I play a game on my iPod. Specially something that requires you to think i.e. a puzzle, word, math, or trivia game. Or I will watch a video of someone creating art.
When I feel better I put on Bob's Burgers or Futurama and let them play while I sleep.

I'm sorry you have nightmares; I hope you find something helpful. *hugs*

    Thank you *hugs back*
That sounds good though, I need something like that instead of simply forcing myself to stay awake.

*sigh* up again from nightmares. I'm going to a few different doctors the next few days and will run this by them. It might be from physical problems I'm having.
It's hard to do at first when you're so tired, you're about to fall asleep where you stand, but even though it is a new thing for me to do, it does help a little to try to change it into something funny. Even though I didn't fully succeed this time and come up with something definite, it did at least remind me that dreams (in this case, nightmares) aren't usually about what you specifically dreamt, if that makes sense.

I'm sure the more I practice it, the more it will help though.
