So, I'm from Germany and for the last couple of years the ruling party CDU has blocked all attempts to vote on same-sex marriage in parliament. It's pretty frustrating because the majority of the population and even parliament is in favor of same-sex marriage. But now elections are coming up and all the other larger parties have declared that they will only participate in a government if the government's program includes the introduction of marriage equality. After that, the CDU was probably afraid to lose voters and chancellor Merkel suddenly seemed much less clear in her disapproval of marriage equality. There's even a chance that the parliament will vote on it before the elections in September. I'm thrilled that things are finally moving ahead

It still amazes me that the US got equal marriage nationwide before Germany...

Germany has had something called ¨life partnerships¨ since 2001, which guarantees gay couples most of the rights of a typical marriage.

Not all these right are guaranteed since 2001. At first there were many many differences. But in most parts life-partnerships are almost equal to marriages now, specially in the last few years the government gave us more rights but we are still not allowed to adopt children.

Doesn't make sense, I mean there are homosexual couples raising kids anyway. Even Alice Weidel has kids.

Somehow the quote doesn't work. What I think doesn't make sense is the act of adoption which is only paperwork.

I actually don't care whether they call it marriage or life-partnership as long as they finally get the adoption stuff together. ( though legally there is an advantage to calling it marriage, since "families" which involves marriage have a special legal status)

I won't celebrate till it's actually through. The CDU already had a phase like this and then went back to their old stance in a matter of two days. Hope it'll go different this time.

( Also: I'm pretty sure the CoC still doesn't allow us to post in german.)

The problem with life partnerships, civil partnerships and civil unions is that there is no clear understanding of what they mean outside of your own country! Is my CP recognised in France, Spain or Germany? (We have converted our CP to marriage - backdated to 2006 ) With marriage, as long as same sex marriage is recognised in the country being visited there is more liklihood of the marriage being recognised.

They just voted for marriage equality
393 "yes" against 226 "no"votes. One of the "no" votes was Merkel.
