The original UK version was good when it came out (I was still in high school) but it might be dated now. I'm not sure about the US version or any others made after that because I never watched them.
I haven't finished the show but the first season of the US (well, actually Canadian) season was good. Like Calf says, it's a bit dated but many of the same themes still persist: struggling with coming out, homophobia, issues with dating, AIDS, gay parenting, etc. It's an interesting view of gay culture, particularly in the early 2000s. There is soft-core porn in it, so be weary (especially for younger members of this site). There's another gay show from a few years ago called Looking, which was the same kind of thing, a gay drama set in San Francisco which is more modern. Same kind of thing as Queer as Folk.
I loved the US version so much that I actually have the five season of the show on DVD. I really wish it would come back on because it ended for me with so many unanswered questions about all of the character's final destiny. I did happen to stumble upon a few episodes of the original UK version of the show but after viewing the US version so many times, I have to say that I was very partial to that version that I did not care to explore the UK version of the show.
Yeah guitar pretty much summed it up. I haven't finished the whole show yet either but I made it about halfway through season 2 I think. It's not a show I'd watch with my mother, that's for sure. Lots of sex scenes and stuff in there so watch out for that. And it could be a bit dated but it deals with a lot of issues that are kinda timeless too. The show Looking on HBO is a lot like Queer as Folk but a little more updated. I recommend both shows. Again, not recommended for kids I guess
i thought the us version was set in pennsylvania? lol, i don't know, it might be me, though at first, i kinda hated it because you only see nothing but twinks and a bit of muscle guys. when i really saw it and the issue they represented, it's pretty much spot on. I saw the whole season, and there were some spots in the show where i thought it was a bit cringeworthy cause i thought it didn't fit well with the plot. The US version that is. The UK version, I definitely liked it, and there were a bit of unanswered question. I think the actors that played the characters in both versions were pretty well suited. I definitely recommend it, a lot of sex though, they're definitely not lying! you'd probably see a dick or two, and a whole lotta titties.
I've thought about watching it (the original UK version), wasn't it written by Russell T. Davies (of doctor who and torchwood)? Is it anything like 'please like me'?
I highly recommend it. It's certainly dated by now, god do I ever feel old realizing that... But it's iconic. It was a huge part of my development as a young gay man - my first real look into a world I knew nothing about, but somehow felt was mine. It's not exactly a true to life view of the LGBT world, but it's definitely still relevant and applicable. Not to mention a well-told story.
Actually, you are right...the series does mentions many times that the show is based in Pennsylvania. However, the show was filmed in Canada.
I loved this show (US version) so much. I really wanted to see Brian and Justin get their "happily ever after" together.
Spoiler I think with Brian and Justin, it ended a bit realistically, They both had to give up who they were if they wanted to be happy with each other, and so that's why it didn't work out. Sometimes life isn't fair.Even though they did care about each other deeply, they weren't getting anything they wanted out of the relationship. Brian is a bit more open and sexual and Justin lean towards companionship and Jon, haha alright, I thought it did take place in penn. sometimes it gets a bit confusing
Oh I just watched 4 episodes of Queer as Folk and I personally loved it. I just love it so much, I would recommend it because it's just a part of LGBT film and television and its one of the earliest TV shows that was progressive. I certainly would not watch it with parents although it's only MA15+ here in Australia.
I watched the UK version when it came out. Can't believe that the young guy went on to be in Sons of Anarchy. I had to do a double take
I did not know that!! I've watched both shows and never even recognized him. He's changed so much it's wild. Now that i watched Queer As Folk again i can see the resemblance.
