    Hey guys,

Just felt a need to share...

The lucky SOB pulled through, without any permanent damage. Heart attacks at his age are considerably more deadly than for older folk (there are generally no smaller arterial blockages and no obvious warning signs), he was very, very lucky. I saw the before and after radiograms, his entire right ventricle was starved of blood.

They put in a stent to unblock the artery, he is recovering now. He's 8 years younger than me, thin as a rake and muscular, but he smokes...a lot. An entire industry dedicated to making people sick, and it continues to this day. Fuck cigarettes.

I have not realized, until this day, just how much he means to me....

I can imagine the fear, anger, and powerlessness you must be feeling right about now. I agree it's often the situations like this that remind us of how much others mean to us. I'm glad to hear that he's OK and recovering. Just be sure to take care of yourself as well... the stress of events like this can really affect us in ways we don't immediately realize.

    Sending positive thoughts your way.

So scary. I'm happy to hear he's doing well, considering.

And yes, enjoy every moment. We often forget to appreciate the simplest things, like just being able to see someone and be happy. It's not until they're taken away, or we have the threat of them being taken away, that we realize those are what make life good. I hope he realizes that, as well, so he stops the smoking!

    Thanks everyone,

Yeah, this event will be far more persuasive than anything I could have said about smoking. He knows well enough that his job now is to take care of himself...for me!

I'm sorry for the scare and so glad he's ok. Here's to a new year with less cigarettes, I hope he takes this as a serious sign to quit. Hugs to you, I'm sure you're still getting over the shock and scare.

That has to be tough. But remember to take care of yourself, as well.

And it doesn't help we live in a world where "taking a break" is seen as lazy/weak but "taking a smoke break" is seen as macho/independent. So ya. Fuck cigarettes.

Hope things turn for the better.

Sorry to hear this! My best wishes for his full and complete recovery, and that you get through this period OK.

There is a lot of truth in that. I've unfortunately heard stories about people who've smoked, and then quit due to a big health situation that might have occurred partly due to smoking. The most tragic is when someone is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.

There could be a silver lining to this event, not only that my BF will finally quit smoking, but my older son, who knows my BF and likes him, was inspired to quit smoking also (my son took on this lovely addiction about 2 years ago, he is freaked out by what happened and has pledged to quit).

Scary stuff, but so glad to hear he's on the mend. There's not much as awful as that sick feeling of knowing something is terribly wrong, but all you can do is wait and hope for the best--which from the sound of it is exactly what you got. May you have many more healthy years together!

Thanks again for your kind words.

He should be out of the hospital by tomorrow, after that, a long two-month recovery during which he will be off work. He most definitely dodged a serious bullet...

    Interesting times!

Oh wow, as I haven't been here for a while forgot that you had found someone, but this scare also means how much he means to you.
Glad he is ok, and it will be a good wake up call to those that smoke.

    Update:

Just got a call from my BF, he's now discharged from the hospital!

It could have been far worse, he is slowly beginning to realize just how serious this was. Had this not happened at the clinic where he works, or if it had happened when we were 45 minutes away north of the city over this past weekend, the outcome could have been very bad indeed!

While he was losing consciousness in the ambulance, he heard one of the paramedics telling the driver to step on it as they were in danger of "losing him".

I am so glad I can hear his voice today, so glad and so grateful.
