Strange question, I know, but I'm helping a friend of mine who specializes in modern anthropology (she has a masters in this) research sexuality questions surrounding the fandom. This is one of the questions that she wanted some input from the LGBT community on. Just so you know, no answers will be used directly, she is just looking for some generalizations to work with so she doesn't make assumptions for the community considering she is straight.

Anyway, for those who read fanfiction, why do you like/dislike slash or femslash in fanfiction. If you write fanfiction, what type of relationships do you portray and why? What aspects of gay relationships in fanfiction are you looking for? What aspects of gay relationships in fanfiction do you not like/agree with?

    Thanks for any help!

I like any kind of couple fanfiction, but my favorite is male/male slash. The only main reason I can think of is....well, It's obvious most are written by women. Romantic, tender, more interesting, better artwork if you're talking about yaoi doujinshi, etc.

I like femslash too, but usually only when I write it myself, mainly because I can tell so much of it is (badly) written by straight people.

For me writing, I actually mostly write straight fanfiction, despite being gay. I guess It's because I've KNOWN I was gay for so long that my experience with sexuality is just dull and mundane now. So I find it more fun to write experiences I can't relate to at this point. So I sadly can't answer your question there. Though the gay relationships I do write are varied; I actually prefer cheesy romantic stuff. My main lesbian couple fell in love first, were fluffy, waited for sex, and are the "making love" types. For me this is just a fantasy since I get sick of homosexuality being so sexualized when I myself am more "demisexual" and romantic. So it was just an internalized fantasy for me that I'm not getting in real life.

The main aspects of gay relationships I don't like are....well, heteronormativity for one. It is annoying to see two guys together with the bottom always being hyper feminine and whiny. Or him being called "wife" or "mom". Just no. He's a guy, not a chick with a dick. Also, rape. I can't stand rape, but It's common in many fanfictions I see. Of any gender combination.

I hate all types of parings when I read fanfics. I don't discriminate at all lol. But really, it's just because romantic/sexual relationships don't interest me and I find they get in the way of the plot. Like, hurry up and go kill those monsters outside the village and omg stop kissing it's not the time!

I view fanfiction as a way to get the representation we want in real fiction, but sadly never seem to get. I gravitate towards fanfics where sexuality isn't the main plot (like in so many LGB books) but instead there just happens to be two lesbians who have to save the world etc. I'm also a fan of male slash but I like stories with plot, rather than just sex.

I read fanfiction involving gay males on occasion, mostly when I want to read a romance that I can actually relate to (I have trouble relating to straight romances and I pretty much can't relate to lesbian romances at all, at least in written form, so when I do read those type stories I generally end up skimming over any romantic scenes). I generally prefer the more 'two mostly normal guys' pairings when I'm looking for something more in depth, but Yaoi and, (this is sort of awkward to admit) rape type stories appeal to my personal fantasies as a bottom, so I read those when I'm feeling less concerned about story quality and more about personal fulfillment.

I am not a fan of slash. There are some cute pairings, yes. But my opinion on that has been radicalized to anti because of some stuff that I simply hate. Johnlock. Winchest. Especially Johnlock. This is totally OOC!!!!!

They are useful as literature porn though.

As a gay lady, it's nice seeing characters like me falling in love. I can relate to a story showing a romance between two women better than I can any other pairing. Stories about gay romance can be harder to find, so I'll often turn to fanfiction to get my fix.

As for what I look for, I prefer stories that take a more realistic approach where you can see the characters getting to know each other before eventually developing feelings. I'm not a fan of having the characters falling madly in love from the first encounter.
