Imagine that at around 3am someone knocks on your front door. If you were asleep, then it woke you up. You were not expecting people at this time. What would you do? Why?

(I'm curious to see what other people would've considered to be the best course of action  and maybe how location influences this)

    Ignore them.

I highly doubt I'd be awake at that time, but if I were, I'd be too tired to get up anyway.

I'd approach the door with at least two or three of us, and as many weapons as we could pull together in a half minute or so (held discreetly rather than brandished). Guns would not be out of the question-- some in the house are more paranoid than others.

Not that we would be necessarily *expecting* trouble, but being such an odd hour, better to be cautious.

To start with I would wonder how they got in without the doorman calling me. I guess I would go to the door and look out the peephole. If I didn't recognize them I wouldn't answer the door.

Considering the house is fully gated, check and see if we need to call the cops?

Or, from afar yell, "coming, who's there" so they assume I'm walking over like it's nothing and see if they respond and act accordingly. I would feel more secure answering while holding a firearm (discreetly).

I keep a maglite the length of my arm next to my bed for such an occasion.
I would sneak over to the door as quietly as possible and just listen. There are windows all around my house so I'd just keep tabs on the person.
Actually, I have two dogs and they go nuts when they hear a knock or the doorbell so we'd probably wake up the entire subdivision.

Would definitely grab a weapon and answer the door without opening it. If no one replied, I'd peak through the peephole just to see who's standing out there.

I'm a very deep sleeper so I doubt I would even wake up but if I did actually wake up I think I would probably ignore it unless they were screaming for me.

I probably wouldn't even hear them, and I'd fall back asleep if I was awakened.

I probably wouldn't even wake up.

But if I did, open the door on the chain to see who it is. I live in a flat, so if the person tried to do anything dangerous I'd quite easily be able to yell for help.

I'm just always ready for an adventure, I guess.
You are not up at 3 am? That's like 10 pm for me. Sleeping is only justified if I can't keep my eyes open.

I'm stupid so I'd just casually open the door and answer

In the UK, brandishing a weapon like that can get you in trouble (there was actually a case not that long ago where a woman got in some trouble for waving a kitchen knife at strangers who broke into her garden), so unless I was sure that I was in danger I probably wouldn't do that.

If they kept knocking and I started to feel really threatened, I'd probably try and find out who it was. If I didn't know them, I'd probably just get a weapon and sit tight. (What kind of serial killer knocks on the door, though?)

I'd just look outside to see how the person looked and call the police. No need to get out a weapon if they're not trying to harm me. Actually, I had a case similar to this where a guy kept throwing stuff at my window. I live in an apartment complex, so I called the janitor and he told him to shoo.

Grab a baseball bat and head for the door. What the hell are you doing knocking on my door at 3 am, anyways?

I'm a little curious where people live that they are taking weapons to their own front door. Wouldn't even occur to me...

Call it a holdover from living in a bad neighborhood for half my life. Bad fucking neighborhood, actually had a murder take place a block from my old house, not once but twice, on the same street corner. You could see where it took place from my front door. Also had two of my bikes stolen while I lived there. I've been out of there for a few years, but grabbing a weapon would still be my first instinct.

Release the hounds and go back to bed. No stranger knocks on my door at 3AM in the morning.
