Half of the south wants to do that. This is the first time I've ever heard that about VT.

I can see it now: the Vermont Navy on Lake Champlain, consisting of a pine-planked boathouse with moss-covered shingles on the roof floating on dual pontoons with a really powerful outboard engine...

Let's not forget that we are a federal system. States and the national government operate together. A state is sure as hell not leaving without the consent of the federal government. And I don't think the federal government would ever want a state to succeed.

I am midly confused as to how the hell this came about but I don't really care about secession because America sucks to an incredibly high degree and I understand why a state would want to do this.

Everyone remembers last time US sections tried to secede, right? Last time it was pro-slavery groups and it didn't turn out too well for either party.

I don't know, I just think it would be better if I just left on my own and went somewhere more fitting rather than trying to make a country with just me. I wouldn't put anyone through that.

Though it seems like a good idea at first to get all the sane individuals away from the crazies, that way actual laws can get passed, then there's nobody to babysit them and you have them running around like lost children.

I should chill out. All this just scares me, I'm afraid history will repeat itself. Maybe I'm paranoid.

I don't understand what people are saying about Texas "doing it first". They didn't. Texas was a part of Spanish Territory/Mexico until the 1800s. Vermont was an autonomous nation before Texas was. Texas is just better known as having been its own republic.

ummm you may not care because you live in the UK but there are people who would be affected by this. Who knows what shitty economic state these autonomous nations would be in if they seceded from the US? It's a terrible idea.

Texas is one of the few states who could pull it off due to their natural resources and technically their own energy grid, but Vermont has very few resources other than maple syrup.

This is not widely known outside of power engineering circles. Do we have a common nerd provenance?

The Clarity Act? While it doesn't necessarily mean the province can go it does potentially provide a means for the to happen in Canada.

Also in terms of US dollars no nation could prevent another from using their currency and of course many right now use American currency.

As far aa Vermont leaving I think if people overwhelming want to they should. That said im not entirely sure it would be to their benefit. The issue of resources doesn't matter much as long as you can make money. (see Israel) Also does Vermont contribute more to the US or the US more to Vermont? You might be losing out on quite a bit of capital from the federal government.

On the question of the US allowing it... I dont imagine the US has license to prevent it forcefully in today's climate. I dont imagine any nation would intervene militarily on Vermont's behalf but I could see investors moving money from the US and a general boycott of American goods in some places. (probably not any official sanctions aside from some CIS states) It might also provoke a major non-violent movement or worse large internal terrorist cell in the US.

When people feel strongly about something it's sometimes best to let them go.

Um, do you even know the US bro? Without a doubt, the vast majority of people in the US would fight to keep Vermont in the US- if it means the death of a few within the state of Vermont, I don't think many would hesitate to go through with a war over it.

However, doing so would paint your country in a terrible light. It's one thing to not agree with the secession, but involving military? Your own allies would turn against you for that.

    ...Why though?
I see no particular value in it. In the end, it'll simply lead to chaos.

I don't really care either way.

This thread surprised me, though.

I think you need to read up on the civil war. I know times are different, but I don't think they're so different that it would end in a different manner.
