As a Lapsed Catholic (to the rest of my family) or Athiest (to me), I agree with Reciprocal.

At least he had the consideration not to say this at World Youth Day in Krakow. I would have had to have a long chat with my brother who was there!

He's right that we can't choose our gender. In other words, we can't choose whether we're cisgender or transgender... It's just who we are. Does he think people would choose to face gender dysphoria and transphobic discrimination? That people enjoy going through all that pain? Surely there is a reason that people decide to transition. It's not because they're being rebellious; it's because they are suffering. It is horrible that he is too blind to see that.

It's terrible that the most progressive pope ever is still so backward compare to a regular Christian with common sense.

It sounds as if he fundamentally misunderstands what "transgender" even is. It is not a supermarket where you go shopping for gender, where you swap for something else what you were born with desultorily according to whim. In fact, his statements could be seen to vindicate the actuality of transgender individuals, because as they will assert, they did not choose to be that way! It only shows the extent to which it is unfortunate that one man has such an influence over so many people with views like this.

After my first reply to this thread I started to think that. I know I could never be a "man", I'm not comfortable in my own body, no matter what I can't choose to be normal.

But the pope message is that your genitals define your gender, so it's the same cis-het normative shit.

    Basically me.
Even if he's tried some damage control, he's still a pope.
In the end, he's still biggoted. As much as it's (a slither of) progress, he's not someone I'd look up to.

It's sad that he's the most open-minded pope in history, probably, yet he has such a low level of understanding for these issues. He's still so backward. The people he influences could do terrible things.

I guess he didn't learn anything from Undertale, huh?

So, this is why I'm an atheist and I don't understand why there are religious LGBT+ people. (I don't mean to offend anybody, I'm just saying...) It's not like we're CHOOSING to be different and be isolated from all our loved ones and everyone who we ever thought were our friends. We were born this way.

To all those who thought the pope was totally hip:

I won't say I told you so... but I told you so.

Coming form a person who was raised Catholic, it doesn't matter how "progressive" Pope Francis is. A pope is a pope and transphobia is still going to be prevalent in Catholicism for the foreseeable future.

I'm in the same boat, so to say. I don't really understand how any women can be either considering the stuff they say about us. Tried to have others explain it to me countless times and I simply never get it, so I just agree to disagree. I suppose as long as they aren't harming others, but I worry about whether or not they give themselves the same mercy.

I don't care what this guy says. When I have kids, I will buy them toys and clothes that fit their physical sex. But if my boy wants a Barbie, then he's getting one. If my girl wants a toy truck, then she's getting one. And if they realize that they don't feel the same gender that they physically are, then I'll support them 100%.

People should remember that when the Pope speaks, sometimes he hasn't a clue what he is talking about.

    He's a silly man..

Or should I say a silly woman because apparently people around you have better judgement on your identity more than you..

'Kids' aren't getting taught that they can choose their own gender. Their getting taught things like the alphabet and how to get along with people (probably in vein), and so on. They find this stuff out on their own.

Raise your kids how you think they should until they tell you how they think they should be. That's exactly how all parents should be. Some just have a hard time letting go.
