It finally releases in Sweden and it gets taken down by a DDoS attack. My hatred for these script kiddies who keep using DDoS to shut down popular gaming services is fucking undying.

The popularity of this game has me completely fucking dumbfounded. Second day of release in Sweden and I took a walk between three different Pokéstops and during that one hour walk, I think i only passed two or three people who were not playing the game. Twice I've been stopped by women who were between 35-40 who were typical moms to ask me questions about the game. They didn't even seem to know what Pokémon actually is, they just heard about the game, tried it and seemed to enjoy it.

No wonder Nintendo stocks are the highest they've been since 1983; a couple of days ago, there were actually more searches on google for "Pokémon GO" than there was for "porn." I literally did not think that was possible.

I downloaded it when it became available in Finland, but my phone is so slow till the end of this month, so the map doesn't keep up where I'm actually going. Once, according to the map in the game, I was in the middle of a lake, when I was walking on the shore  I'm not addicted to it (yet), I only use it, when I go on a walk with our dogs ^^

It's finally released in Canada (!), but 1) I can't use it without wifi since I deactivated my iPhone, and 2) I live in the middle of nowhere so there's nothing around here.

I started playing on Saturday with my sister. I'm almost at Level 5 and will soon have to make a choice.

Also, thank goodness for unlimited data from Sprint.

Also, my starter Pokemon was Pikachu.

There is a trick to make the app use less data and battery. Since it runs off of google maps, you can download the google maps app and then add desired area to your saved offline areas and the game will start using that instead. You still need to be online, but it will use less of both battery and data.

I also recommend turning on the battery saver function; it blacks out the screen when you lower the phone without closing the app.

Thanks for the tips. Randy here already told me of the battery saver mode and I've been using it. I will probably also download the maps around home and work.

At first I was pretty skeptical and I still am in some respects. I worry about kids and about people's safety. However I downloaded it and it's a lot of fun. My friend and I played it today for about 3 hours together. It has me going on long walks to "hatch eggs" and it got my friend to go walking with me which he doesn't usually do. Also as a 90s kid I feel like kids these days didn't know the greatness of Pokemon and now they can learn about it. Pokemon on the Game Boy was where it's at though #oldschool #90'skids

I got a Pikachu and I almost screamed because I was so excited. Pikachu was my favorite as a kid/teenager. Yayy PikaCHU

    Damn! That's just, wow...

On that note, as someone who does not and never has owned a smartphone - what would be the cheapest Pokémon Go-compatible phone/plan? (US based)

You can actually catch Pikachu as your first Pokémon. When you need to catch your first pokémon, physically run away from them four times and a Pikachu will show up when they show up the fifth time.

I was gonna do it originally, but when the starters popped up, I changed my mind. I picked Charmander 18 years ago and it felt wrong to not pick him again.

Pokemon Go would be compatible with almost any touch screen phone. Straight talk is $45/mo but I don't know the logistics of how that plan works. You'd have to look it up. Also, T-Mobile has a $30/mo plan that has unlimited data, 100 minutes for talk, and I believe unlimited text. So that one is still available but it's not advertised, it's hidden on the t-mobile website. If you google it, you'll find it. So that, I believe, is offered on a stand-alone SIM. So you'll have to order your own phone, unlocked, paying full price. And then order a stand-alone SIM WITH the $30/mo plan information coded in there Here's a link for more information: T-Mobile Prepaid Plans

Oh yeah, don't get a windows phone. Not only is Pokemon GO not available on windows phone, you'll grow to hate the phone over time.

I have Straight talk and my phone was around $99 then you have to add the $45 for minutes, though it is unlimited talk, text and data (first 5gb then it drops from 4G to 2G)

I'm absolutely hooked on it! It's gotten to the point where I'll drive to neighboring towns since my house is in the middle of nowhere.
