We were doing some GCSE revision for RE (religious education) for the discrimination topic. The subject of Transphobia came up. After a long discussion my teacher dismissed Transsexuality as a ' Childlike fantasy' and said that he would disown his child if he turned out to be trans. I personally found this quite shocking that someone would expresses this views in the school environment. Especially from a teacher. What are other peoples opinions on this?

It doesn't shock me to be honest. Certainly a sad thing to hear though.

Considering this teacher is teaching religious education, it is not very surprising lol. They have a skewed view of things on matters such as these like many others in the religious communities.

"Childlike fantasy" ? well, u should'v told him that in your opinion, believing there is an invisible entity that looks at u all the time is a childlike fantasy ... IMO he should be fired and not be allowed to pour his dark opinions in a school environment, maybe report him (annonymously) ?

Talk about a man-child... Good parents try to help thier child even when they are total human crap.. With the things I did to my family wanting to be the opposite sex sounds completely tame!

Well considering my parents have said the same exact thing, I don't find it hard to believe, no.

It's not his job to give his opinion on such subjects. That was so unprofessional of him, seriously.

Agreed on the impropriety...not sure he has no right to voice an opinion, though, as long as he's expressing it as his opinion.

But what makes me sick is how skin-deep the love of some parents is for their children. People think they love...but so many have no idea what love is.

There would be no survivors of that burn.

In all seriousness though, it is a religious studies teacher and although they do preach compassion and forgiveness, they don't often practice it and it's a terrible shame.

Not surprised a religious education teacher is a bigot.

I'd only hope, for his child's sake, that he reacts differently from what he expresses.

Well give me a few months and I'll let you know what it's like when a colleague says something similar to me when I come out at school...

He should be fired immediately and not allowed to teach unless he somehow pays himself to go through some program where he can prove that he's a decent human being worthy to be within 10 feet of any child or student whatsoever.

Perhaps you should have told him that when you have kids, if one of them comes home and tells you that they want to be an RE teacher, instead of an actual proper teacher, you would consider disowning them.

OR an even quicker burn - "and what would your boyfriend do sir?"

On a serious note, you should consider reporting this, anonymously if possible, as he clearly doesn't understand the mandate of his role. His job is to teach about religion and it's views, not to impose or express his own. I certainly wouldn't be happy with this guy teaching my kids if I was a parent, regardless of their gender, orientation or beliefs.

It's not acceptable and I'm not even sure it's appropriate in the UK education system. Even in academies that have opted out of local authority control there is (as far as I know) a need to provide a balanced education, free from prejudice and intolerance.

RE is about exploring and understanding all faiths and cultures and how they relate to society. It's not for the teacher to grandstand and propagate their own ideas.

Exactly my thinking. I'm pretty sure they can get into some big trouble saying that sort of thing here in the UK. I'd certainly look at who you can file a complaint with, but then again I'm in my twenties now and a lot braver. If I was still a teenager at school I'd probably just bite my tongue and try not to "cause trouble". This is totally out of line though - and it's surely only a matter of time until this teacher lands themselves in some serious hot water.
