There's a difference between being economically right wing and being a biggoted idiot. Former might be backed by legitimate arguments (supporting capitalism in conservative sense, for insance), the latter cannot withstand critique just as racism couldn't.

That said, I'm more in the centre or maybe the left, and the definitions would vary from country to country. I wouldn't be surprised to see an LGBT+ Tory; it's the Tory government that brought equal marriage to UK - with Labour support, but still, that counts. Tories have their capitalist views that I can respect and argue with. Can't say the same about the anti lgbt Republicans.

So, a right wing (capitalist) LGBT person? Sure, why not. Not my approach, but there would be no hypocrisy in being economically right wing while staying open minded.

And as a left leaning person I can't say more without starting a debate! Hopefully though, I managed to say that right wing doesn't equate anti-lgbt. It very often does, but would be unfair to generalise for all the liberal capitalists out there.

True, true, I agree with most of what you say. I'd like to add that racism and bigotry and other forms of stupidity exist all over the political compass. The right is just more overt.
And thanks for not starting a debate, much appreciated :icon_bigg

I'm quite socially conservative myself though :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I'm assuming you mean to the right? "Right wing" is about economics. Right-wing=/=Republican.

    Aye.

    ---------- Post added 14th Apr 2016 at 04:41 AM ----------

Right-wing and Republican aren't the same. Right-wing is usually about economics. I'm right-wing, but I support legalizing cannabis and gay marriage, for example.

Economic conservatism is just one facet of the right wing. Social conservatism is another facet, characterized by support for pro-religious laws, opposition to same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination laws, opposition to abortion, etc. The right wing is also commonly associated with nationalism and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

So while the pro-capitalist, anti-socialist position is one of the common identifiers of the right wing, there's more to it than that.

I'll try not to become a leftie! I don't think the opportunities and freedom I desire as a young person can ever exist in a left-wing society. :icon_bigg

Politically I'm all over the place, but broadly speaking you could perhaps call me right-leaning.

My answer is more of an eh...

Given my education (economics) I tend to be a bit more libertarian economically speaking, but also understand the fact that sometimes achieving the greatest "welfare" isn't socially optimal. "Welfare," of course, in this economic discipline sense and not the word that is anathema to certain right-wingers.

I tend to be more "social right wing" privately. I do believe men should behave a certain way and women another way and even find transgenderism to be a difficult pill to mentally swallow (even after years of learning about it), but I hold these views as private and believe government shouldn't impose the will of a few (or many) and restrict the liberties of others.

Same. I still don't fully understand transgenderism, especially with regard to the notion of "gender = social construct", which I don't necessarily believe in the first place. Though I don't believe that anyone should act a certain way based on their gender, I do recognize that many people do act a certain way and believe there's nothing wrong with this, nor is this purely the result of a social construct.

This. But not to offend what anyone here might think or feel, I never understood how there can be more than two or three genders. By third gender I'm referring to intersex people. How is it a social construct? Well obviously, things like " boys like blue, girls like pink" are made up by society, and can change when you go to different parts of the world, but is being male or female itself a " social construct" I'm a guy because I have male genitalia, and women are women because they female genitalia, and there's some things I can do that women can never do, biologically speaking, and vice versa. That clearly isn't made up by society now is it?

    ---------- Post added 14th Apr 2016 at 04:23 PM ----------

Very true that! At first I wanted to include something along the line of "Ya independent with your stances all over places, shut ye mouth!". But that would make this thread a dead place.

Final note: I don't seek a debate here, this is just to find how many people are like-minded (*hug*)[/QUOTE]

That's okay! I was just about to comment about your foolishly grammatically incorrect use of "ye".

I'd say I'm a modern conservative (yes I see the irony) so it's to the right for me. I'd love to live in a socialist world but we don't so I find that often the aims of the right are more realistic than the left.
Also when it comes to politicians, it is less annoying to be looked down upon by the right wing elite than patronised by the left wing privileged.
