Ex-ADL chief: Trump's 'raise your hand' gambit was deliberate, Nazi-style 'fascist gesture' | The Times of Israel

Former Anti-Defamation League director Abe Foxman excoriated Donald Trump for urging his supporters at a weekend rally to raise their right hands and promise to support him, a gambit Foxman said evoked echoes of Hitler salutes from Nazi rallies in the 1930s and ’40s.

    and

“It is a fascist gesture,” Foxman said. “He is smart enough — he always tells us how smart he is — to know the images that this evokes. Instead of asking his audience to pledge allegiance to the United States of America, which in itself would be a little bizarre, he’s asking them to swear allegiance to him.”

Furthermore, Foxman added, “He even threatens that if they don’t, they will suffer and be punished. This is so over the top for a man who really doesn’t come out of the underground. He is a man of the world. Even though he proclaims he doesn’t know who David Duke was, or the other white supremacists, we know very well that he knows. So he’s playing to an image.”

While Trump’s behavior during this election season has been the source of much consternation for Foxman, he finds it even more troubling that the billionaire businessman evidently appeals to such a large segment of the American public.

He isn't the only one. :icon_sad:

“When he said, ‘I can walk down the street on Fifth Avenue and kill somebody and my supporters will not desert me,’ he knows exactly what buttons he’s pushing. Or when that guy interrupted his speech. People in that situation may think internally, ‘Oh, I want to punch him in the mouth.’ But you don’t say it, you don’t say it, because it’s not civilized. But he said it and it was applauded,” Foxman bemoaned.

Eh, the still photos looked eerily familiar but watching the actual video made me think people were overreacting.

The truly concerning thing about his rallies are the violence protestors have faced on behalf of Trump supporters. And Trump egging it on.

And of course you can't deny the extreme racist language the guy uses in his campaign, and the racism of a large number of his supporters.

But this thing in particular - meh.

Overblown as usual to satisfy an increasingly desperate agenda.

Hey look, Donald Trump just farted! His farts must surely have sounded and smelled like Hitler's!

Whenever anyone uses the Nazi card it means they are desperate...

Vague comparisons to Hitler are incredibly easy to trump up (pun intended). PETA chairwoman is a vegan and an animal lover. She sounds exactly like Hitler!!!

It's less the fact that a bunch of people en masse raising their right hands looks like a nazi salute.

And more that asking supporters to signal their personal loyalty to a political leader is straight out of the fascist handbook.

Its not the fact that he has rallies where his supporters scrram at minorities and violently kick them out because of the pigment of their skin and raise their hands like the facists nazis. Its the combination of that with his policies which are extremely similar to that of adolf hitler.

I don't understand how you'd have to be desperate to be able to compare Donald Trump to a Nazi? Because it's not even hard. Let's play a game of 'who said/did the thing, Donald Trump or Hitler?', shall we?

    - Blamed minorities for all the issues in the country
    - Thought that containing or getting rid of the minorities would fix the countries problem
    - Wants to mark minorities to set them aside from 'purer' race people
    - Made vague promises, such as 'We will make our country great again'
    - Deliberately fed off of people's fear in order to make their extreme views seem more valid
    - Main asset is being a strong public speaker, uses this to gain strong loyalty
    - Believes people's loyalty is strong enough that they could kill people and not face any backlash
    - Has a distressingly close relationship with an immediate family member

I could go on but right now I'm procrastinating on a chemistry paper. So there's that.

Gay people for Trump is like Vegetarians for meat! I'll laugh myself silly if he gets in and then overturns LGBT rights as he is homophobic. Watch some of his interviews, he has no love for us that is for sure. We rank right up there with the 'illegals' for him.......

Comparing your opponents to Nazis/Hitler is generally uncalled for and immature. But in the case of Trump, he openly called for systemic, regulated prejudice against Muslims, and implied that we should cast a leery eye at Mexicans too. Combining that with this stunt makes the comparison a lot more legitimate.

    1. No he didn't. Show me where he blamed minorities for all the issues in the country.
    2. Trump has not advocated containing or getting rid of minorities. He wants people to enter America legally and not illegally. He also advocated a temporary ban on Muslims for security reasons.
    3. Where do you come up with this stuff?
    4. It's his slogan. In that case, Clinton's ''fighting for us'' and Bernie's ''a future to believe in'' are just as vague, if not more.
    5. That's incorrect. Trump has millions of supporters and if you think they support him because of him feeding fears, you're completely mistaken. 8% of his voters are concerned with terrorism and 14% with immigration, meaning that 78% of the people who vote for him are voting for different reasons, such as the economy and jobs - 43%
    6. That's so flawed on so many levels - the greatest asset for anyone who wants to try for public office is public speaking
    7. That is a lie
    8. Also a lie

8b. And people squeal asking why so many people support him.... it's posts like these that make independent or democrat voters swing his way :eusa_doh:

    Altered back.

You have so little to attack on, that you just have to go for his ancestral name, which is hundreds of years old. It's cool though, nothing makes the air sweeter than the frantic attempts by the anti-trump campaign look more and more disheveled after Trump keeps emerging stronger after each attack.

Have a good night sweetie

If only it weren't for that pesky First Amendment...

Despite that it says "Congress", doing this proposal by executive order or other means is still as un-American as it gets. A candidate who doesn't know or doesn't respect literally the very first right of the people expressed in the Bill of Rights has no business in government.

Before I state anything, let me clarify that I do not and will not support Mr. Trump.

How is a temporary ban of Muslims entering a First Amendment issue? He's not calling for suppressing those already in the States from practicing their faith. However repugnant it is to think in these terms, it is not a First Amendment issue to keep a quota regard who is allowed to enter the country from the outside. Restrictions on refugees from Syria for example. Several progressive and socialist countries have restricted their entry, as has recently Turkey; I believe.

As to the perceived Nazi salute, it is a tempest in a teapot. it is not unusual to raise one's right hand when swearing an oath. Obama did this when he became president. One regularly does this when taking the stand before giving evidence in courts across the country. En masse, I will grant that it looks a bit disconcerting, but I don't believe so in reality. The reaction to the comment about "bad things will happen" is again a case of overreacting. It sounds more like an adult reminding a child to keep their promises, a lesson in karma, or that there is a God watching over us telling us not to sin.

Really, one needs to get a grip and keep things in perspective. It does nothing, but make those with an opposing opinion look petty and small. Also one needs to not cite evidence that is not there, which is something Mr. Trump has done frequently. Finally, a gentle caution to keep things civil and less shrill; something both Mr. Trump and Senator Clinton both need to do.

I find gay people who support Trump just as horrifying as Caitlyn Jenner supporting Ted Cruz.
Its makes no sense. These people are out to take the very rights that the community has fought so long to gain.
Now if you found a Rupblican who actually gave a damn about the LGBT community and wanted people to have easy access to healthcare, and affordable college (like the countries that have free higher education), and who won't want to harm people of the 2nd largest religion in the world simply because a few dipshits want to start a holy war that members of their own religion disagree with, or deport people who are Mexican and foolishly think America a great place to live (which it might be compared to where they use to live, and just other things....well then I might say vote for that Republican.
But you see...the problem with that is that he/she/they would be labeled a Democrat by everyone. So I'll save everyone the trouble and vote for Bernie Sanders.

Is this from the Jewish Anti-Defamation League? I find it very ironic that they preach "equal rights" and promote gay marriage when they literally wrote the books that founded modern homophobia. They can paint rust any color they like, it's still rust.
